one would think they'd take WC qualifiers a lot more serious than they took their maiden Asian Cup tournament

World Cup
If we get the following right we should:
1. Experienced, highly qualified and successful international coach.
2. Ensure no more walk outs or no shows with the players from Europe.
3. Ensure the team adopts a flexible and skilled based system.
4. Improve preparation and support of FFA.
However long term drastic changes are needed to grass root football are needed to ensure the game grows and improves.

I think the Asian Cup saw alarming signs of incompetence, negligence and complete lack of planning and support from the FFA who set up Arnold to be crucified (he is incompetent, I am not debating that).
A new amazing coach may help but if the FFA don't get their stuff together quick it will only be down to the individual.
It's disgraceful to see what regression Australian Football has displayed on all fronts in Asia.
I would use almost exclusively A-League players, by the way.
I feel very let down by the system.

Re: World Cup
Basically the players who qualifiy should be the ones who are taken should we qualify (imo)ozzie owl wrote:If we get the following right we should:

How many go through from Asia.
On the plus side, teams have to come to australia, but then most of your players have longer journeys than they do. Anything to stop you playing them in London instead? (I know the australian football public wouldn't be happy but would give you one hell of an advantage).
On the down side, again the travelling and jet lag of your entire starting XI and the fact that you have to play games in Asia where you will have minimal preperation time. I believe players only have to be released 3 days prior to games (would be 4 days because of travelling time for you lot) that doesn't allow much time for you to accustom to conditions and we all know how well you play in humid conditions.
That said, you should be seeded so should be able to win at home and draw away. Should be enough to go through, as long as 3 or more teams go through.

anyway australia has to make it to world cups consistently, otherwise it will be disastrous for the game here, we need that feeling of 06 back again!

It is going to be difficult but at least it will be fair and that is the reason we joined Asia - to get a fair go!
The FFA underestimated the standard of Asian football this time - I don't think they will do so again.
I like Arnie, he is honest, competent and hard working and has the respect of most of his players but lacks an international profile.
We need to get a coach of the quality of Advocaat to be taken seriously.
He knows world football inside out - like Hiddinck - and has a brilliant tactical ability. He is also able to handle 'personalities' and clubs due to his standing in the game.
This Brazilian guy that coached Iraq would be an excellent Youth and Olyroo's coach and National Coaching Director.
