Socceroos set new Pay TV audience record

The Australia v Japan AFC Asian Cup football match on Saturday night created a new Australian Subscription TV record audience with an average of 419,000 people watching the game on FOX SPORTS.

The Australia v Japan AFC Asian Cup quarter final had a higher average audience than any program in the history of Australian Subscription TV as well as a peak audience of 515,000 during the penalty shoot out.

The match, which went right down to the wire before Australia was knocked out in heart-breaking circumstances, also attracted a total audience of 1,029,000, according to ratings recorded by OzTAM Data.

These figures do not include the huge number of people who watched the match at one of 3,600 FOX SPORTS venues around Australia in what was a massive night of sport on Saturday night.

â€œThis is a watershed result for FOX SPORTS and Subscription TV,â€ said FOX SPORTS CEO David Malone. â€œTo achieve audiences of this magnitude is a clear indication of the significant growth in Subscription TV and further evidence of the viewing numbers we can deliver.

â€œIt also reinforces FOX SPORTSâ€™ investment in Australian sport and the fans are reciprocating by embracing the Socceroos, NRL, AFL, Wallabies and the other sports and teams we proudly broadcast.â€

The previous Subscription TV record was 415,000 (an innings of a New Zealand v Australia Chappell Hadlee cricket match). The Australia v Japan figure follows the earlier clash between Australia and Oman, which attracted an average audience of 345,000.

FOX SPORTS will continue its commitment to the AFC Asian Cup by televising the two semi-finals (Wednesday night), play-off for 3rd/4th (Saturday night) and the final (Sunday night)

This just confirms that football should have been protected by the anti syphoning laws and be available for all to see on free to air TV.

PASS IT, sorry to say this but there are more WOGS who watch Champions League games on Foxtel at 3 in the morning than Sullivans who watch GAYFL on free to air on any given Saturday afternoon. Lets not forget also that with the way the GAYFL has fuuuked up its T.V rights, you cant even watch a replay anymore, not even on Fox unless of course you stay up at 2 in the morning and by that time, most Sullivans are eating one of those pies with peas mashed up like my dogs skata out the front of the casino after they been drinking Horse Piss they call Beer all friking night so in essence the GAYFL has done a wonderful job in shooting itself. Not to mention that they have put there prices up for Prelims and Grand Finals tickets by 10 percent, what a laugh. Its now gonna cost ya 90 smackeroos to watch a bunch of Rugby wannabes kill each other in September over a ball which is best served for my breakfast with bacon. For that sort of money id rather go and see a real fight between Michael Zambedes and the Gherkin Ozkan at one of Tarik Solaks fight nights, a much better breed of fighters with alot more SKILL
