Italy squad for upcoming games

Post by Juventino »

Don chooses Inzaghi

Filippo Inzaghi and Cristiano Lucarelli have been included in Roberto Donadoni’s Italy squad to face the Faroe Islands and Lithuania.

The Azzurri are currently fourth in the Euro 2008 Group B behind Ukraine, Scotland and France and will face the Faroe Islands on June 2 in Torshavn, before travelling to Kaunas, where they will play Lithuania on June 6.

Donadoni called-up 23 men for the Euro 2008 qualifiers, but there are no new faces on the list.

Alessandro Nesta will not be part of the squad, as well as Luca Toni and Mauro Camoranesi (both injured), whereas Inzaghi’s brace in the Champions League Final with Liverpool earned him a call-up, as the former Juventino was preferred to teammate Alberto Gilardino.

Lucarelli’s 20 Serie A goals this season, which ended with a brace against Atalanta on Sunday, allows the Livorno captain to return to the Azzurri squad, which also includes Alessandro Gamberini of Fiorentina, who had earned his maiden call-up on the occasion of Donadoni’s debut on Italy’s bench last summer.

The squad will meet at the Coverciano training camp on Tuesday morning for two days of work, before travelling to the Faroe Islands on Thursday afternoon.

The Azzurri will return to Italy after Saturday’s match and will train in Milanello before flying to Lithuania on June 5.

Goalkeepers: Abbiati (Torino), Amelia (Livorno), Buffon (Juventus)

Defenders: Barzagli (Palermo), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Materazzi (Inter), Oddo (Milan), Pasqual (Fiorentina), Tonetto (Roma), Zambrotta (Barcelona)

Midfielders: Ambrosini (Milan), De Rossi (Roma), Diana (Palermo), Gattuso (Milan), Perrotta (Roma), Pirlo (Milan)

Forwards: Del Piero (Juventus), Di Natale (Udinese), Inzaghi (Milan), Lucarelli (Livorno), Quagliarella (Sampdoria), Rocchi (Lazio)

good to see Rocchi-gol in the squad. hopefully he will get to play. prob the two easiest teams in the group so this squad should expect to win comfortably. we can't drop points in lithuania

No wide midfielders, so it will be a very very similar system to Milans game.

We'll see Di Natale and Quagliarella start IMO with Perrotta central of the two wide forwards. Lucarelli possibly as the bomber or Inzaghi on the last line.

Pick your best combination for defensive midfield  Ambrosini (Milan), De Rossi (Roma), Diana (Palermo), Gattuso (Milan), Pirlo (Milan)

So it will be same forward set-up as against Scotland, where Di Natale and Camoranesi played wide and Perotta in the centre behind Toni.

No cama's though, so they will likely put Quagliarella up there.

Yeh I know, just thought it may be easier to visualise a formation by thinking of the Scotland game

from a player point of view, i spose country should come before club, but from a supporter's point of view, give me club football any day of the week.

Coppa Regina 06/07 Amoruso and Bianchi- 35 goals- isn't enough for either of them to get a call up. Modesto and Mesto deserved some recognition as well. This is so pathetic..... Is their a rule in Italy that Reggina players do not play in the National Team??? As soon as our stars leave they get call ups.
