Re: MARCH 9 draw
top 4 teams in asia are seeded so 2 seeds in each group so we can get japan, korea or i would say iran is the other seed?dudley wrote:we cant get japan, they like us are seeded

Re: MARCH 9 draw
not quite. AFC just confirmed would use March FIFA rankings. We are ranked 20 (first), Korea are second, Japan are third, Iran are fourth. so this is the pot draw (each group of 5 gets two from Pot 4):DOC wrote:top 4 teams in asia are seeded so 2 seeds in each group so we can get japan, korea or i would say iran is the other seed?dudley wrote:we cant get japan, they like us are seeded
Pot 1: Australia, Korea Republic
Pot 2: Japan, Iran
Pot 3: Uzbekistan, Iraq
Pot 4: Jordan, Qatar, Oman, Lebanon.
Top two in each group through to the WC automatically, both 3rd place teams playoff with the right to face another playoff team from another confederation (Oceania again? or changed to CONMEBOL?)
Would like to see this group:
Australia
Iran (exorcise demons of 1997)
Uzbekistan (beat them 6-0 in January, got to have some psychological pull)
Lebanon (weakest of the four teams)
Oman (even though they beat us recently, they are a known quantity)

Re: MARCH 9 draw
I was hoping we would have got old enemy Iran. Would have been a big profile for the game with over 100,000 in Tehran & a full house in Melbourne or Sydney.
The away game versus Iraq in a neutral mid-East venue might look bad on TV with 1,000 people.
Thank goodness the home tie with the fleet-footed Japan is early on so it's not a dead rubber & we get a decent crowd.
How can we push for two stretcher teams to be at the ready for the home games against Oman, Jordan & Iraq to whip off the opponents when they inevitably get "injured" if they happen to be leading or drawing?

Re: MARCH 9 draw
paper calling it the group of death, what a joke, yes 3 trips to the gulf is tough but if you cant beat oman lebanon and iraq you dont deserve to go to the world cup, group should be decided by the two games with japan if all goes well
the uzbeks and korea would have been tougher me thinks, plus iran are no slouches so i think we came off alright from the draw
