West Adelaide (SANFL) breach salary cap, norwood too maybe

Post by Red-4-Life »

WEST Adelaide CEO Kym Russell has blamed administrative errors for his club's breach of the SANFL salary cap.

Russell admitted to the Weekly Times Messenger last week his club had exceeded the $360,000 annual salary cap.

He said his club knew as far back as June that it could potentially commit a breach and notified the SANFL.

It is not known how much the Bloods breached the cap by.

Russell blamed the Bloods' good run with injuries and more fringe players, who would be paid less if they played Reserves, playing consistent league football.

The SANFL Commission will meet on November 27 and is set to hand down a penalty, which could include a fine or recruiting restrictions in coming seasons.

Russell said his club took full responsibility for the errors.

"You have to everyone contracted by March 31 ... we contracted our players using a set of assumptions which we've used in previous years and those assumption this year turned out to be incorrect," Russell said.

"We made a full declaration of the player contracts to the SANFL and we discussed the matter with them early in the year when we knew we were going to potentially breach but it was too late.

"Once the season starts you can't re-contract players and amend your errors.

"You get stuck with decisions you make ... we take full responsibility for it and we will wait until the (SANFL) Commission meets and await our penalty.

"Until then, we won't comment any further on the matter."

Last season the Bloods returned to the SANFL finals for the first time since 2004 and went on to lose the grand final to Norwood on October 7.
