Figo wants 48 team World Cup

Post by ozzie owl »

FIFA chief candidate Luis Figo wants to expand the World Cup to 48 teams, what a crazy idea. Sounds like a vote buying trick IMO.

Interesting.

I guess the idea is that it gives almost-there countries in tough confederations a chance to compete and improve.

But then, it's a competition for the best countries in the world, so I guess 'almost-there' countries don't deserve to be there.

There would be far too much rubbish teams in it.

It's vote pandering from Figo, which is a surprise because it's what Blatter does so well. He's trying to out-Blatter Blatter.

48, Scotland would have half a chance, although still only 50-50

I have to agree. Bigger isn't always better.

I like the current 32.

As a separate tourny once every so often, may sound far-fetched but wouldnt it be kind of interesting if you had, say a 128 nation "FA cup" style knock-out tournament - all nations drawn from a hat, no host nation just whoever drawn first plays home. You'd need a few preliminary rounds to get it down to 128, but it could give some of the "medium" nations a chance to get quite far with the odd kind draw.

Even some of the "lesser" nations would have a chance, like orstraya.

Lol, our friend the bitter ex-Pom, how your country winning the Asian Championship must have hurt

For the record our country has qualified for the last 3 world cups so we don't need it to be extended

I think it's wrong you'd even support that many.

Problem with 24 was the cumbersome method of reaching the knockout phase.

Aren't you due a visit to the "other sports" forum for your "expert" cricket comments? You've been noticeably "absent".

I agree. Either you have 16 or 32.
If you must have 24 best have four groups of six.

You really are a misery aren't you. I actually looked at this post (I have you on foe) because I thought you might give your opinion on what the appropriate number of world cup spots was (the reason that I opened this topic), but instead .... Do you just post this same cr@p every time the owl makes a comment, regardless of the subject matter, or did I just catch you on a bad day?
You think you're some sort of super fan because you claim to support only Millwall ... you even try to make a positive out of the fact that you don't support the team you play for, or the team your kids play for, as if somehow that's something to be admired.
You're a self centred, self opinionated :clown: and I doubt I'll be opening any of your posts again soon.

That's good then, you won't read this.

For the record, 16. 9 European, 6 S American and 1 British.

No spot for the current holders?
(which I realise are European at present but may not be the case next time)

No, they should qualify the same as everyone else.

I've rethought this.

Oceania 0.25
Africa 0.25
Asia 0.25
N America 0.25
S America 5.5
Europe 8.5
Britain 1

With the hosts qualifying and losing 1 qualification position from the list.

Does this need a "wind up" disclaimer or is it just too obvious?

Nice that Britain is not acknowledged as part of Europe. About time england played in their own confederation.
