Thought of you the moment I saw the headline on the BBC web site.
Time for some righteous indignation

Simple fact is, wherever there are oceans of cash floating around, there will be corruption, it would be naive to think otherwise.

Easy to rig say, a tennis match, but a damn sight harder to rig an 11 v11 game, especially at the top level where all the players are multi-millionaires anyway. Even if the ref was bought, it wouldn't guarantee anything.

"European police agency Europol has uncovered more than 380 suspicious matches in 15 countries, including a Champions League game played in England in the last three or four years."

Chelsea vs Barcelona 2009 anyone ?

EDIT: reports are that it was Liverpool vs Debrecen.

But hang on, weren't you saying the game was corrupt because Man Utd keep on getting dodgy refereeing decisions, inferring that the FA was somehow corrupt?

That's why people were constantly laughing at you! Anybody with half a brain knows that no sport is 100% clean and there will always be things like this happening.

You only have to look at the corruption in Italy and the Bruce Grobbelaar saga to realise that the sport is sometimes dodgy.

Except Grobbelaar was found innocent - WHEN WILL YOU EVER GET ANYTHING RIGHT???

The FA is corrupt too. I think it will be in about 6 years the truth starts to come out. How long did it take for Lance etc?

1999 cricket world cup semi final, everyone said what a great game at the time....

Nicky T, seriously. You were moaning about particular games and dodgy decisions and playing the corrupt card straight away. Dont act like you know exactly whats going on.

Out of the 380 games investigated, only one was played in England.

Of course I don't know exactly what is going on, except there is wide spread corruption, and the FA is going to be in the real cabernet when it's exposed properly.

Too many have too much to lose at present. Sadly the game we all love is in a bad way.

The worst thing is, once a player / ref is roped in to doing it once they have to continue doing or they will just get extorted!

Did a lot of those of those matches get a betting plunge to end up as draws?
Draws are big when betting on the Pools.

It must be easier to bribe players/teams to stand off each other letting the game fizzle out to draw.

And bribe refs to NOT give penalties, rather dish out yellow cards for diving.

If so, would a solution be to award 4 points for a win, leaving draws at a relatively valueless 1 point?

the keeper was done a while ago now is singing like a bird.

they wanted 3 goals but with 26 shots on goal liverpool only scored 1.
police seized texts where they were pissed off about how poor liverpool's finishing was.

Definitely not a red, i'm trying to find a video of it because i seem to remember it being bang on 60 minutes.

All i'm suggesting is that a ref turning that many penalties down was either retarded or a bit dodgy.

Digressing for a moment to that squeaky clean code only played here in Orstralya.

Did any forumite bet on any aussie rules games during that period when some clubs were suspected of maybe tanking (aka throwing a game)?
