Despite Old Ignatians having several promising forward moves they rarely troubled Anthony Stam in the Gardens goal. Gardens went ahead after only about 5 minutes and seemed content with their lead. Michael Brooks was contained quite well by James Kitchin but was able to provide the pass to set up Gardens opener. Iggies keeper did well to prevent Brooks from posting Gardens second midway through the half. Shane Golder was solid at the back for Gardens and Paul Ebomo showed some his typical on ball flair but unusually, was caught in possession on several occasions.
Old Ignatians appeared to be intent on holding Gardens at bay in the hope of finding a chance on the break.
The game remained at 1-0 until very late in the second half when Old Ignatians pushed forward in numbers to find the elusive equaliser....However, as often happens, the trailing side were caught out as Michael Brooks found himself on the break and he rounded Iggies keeper to make it 2-0 and advance Gardens to Round 3 of the Challenge Cup.
Not a great deal of atmosphere at the game until a passing freight train released a cloud of diesel smoke over the ground.
