Southern Knights ( 4 ) San Marco ( 0 )....with pics

Post by swannsong »

First up on behalf of everyone at Southern Knights I want to wish Eddie Stone, Southern Knights team manager for many years (and his wife Ann ) all the best with their retirement move to Queensland.
Hopefully Eddie can keep up to date with Knights through this forum. Cheers and thanks for everything Eddie & Ann.

Southern Knights, courtesy of Tony Micallef, made a quick start against visitors San Marco scoring the opening goal within about a minute of kick-off.
I hadn't even removed my camera from its case !
Knights were missing Matt Daughtry (flu) and were still minus Chris Bradley (inj) but were able to re-introduce Scott Bradley back into the side.
Freed up from defensive duty with the inclusion of the experienced Steve "Maggy" Maguire at left back, Sandy Neary was able to open up San Marco's defence.
Not surprisingly, within about 10 minutes Knights stretched their lead to 2-0 through Sandy Neary.
San Marco regained composure and began to string together their close passing game but Ben Jones and Lyndon Parry covered a lot of ground in midfield to keep them in check.
At the back Tom Jolly, Matty Harrison, Steve Maguire and Lee White combined well and anything slipping through was picked up by Mark Kay in Knights goal.
David Mooney and Scott Bradley made several runs at San Marcos defence but were unable to convert and the score remained 2-0 at half time.
The second half saw Knights creating several chances before Tony Micallef eventually broke through to put Knights 3-0 in front.
Mark Kay produced some fine saves to keep out San Marco at bay and Knights went 4-0 up when David Mooney converted from the penalty spot.
All in all, another good result for Knights as they chase the lead pack in Division 2.

Reserves - Southern Knights ( 4 ) San Marco ( 3 )
Paul Thompson (4)

A four goal haul from Paul "Thommo" Thompson gave Southern Knights Reserves only their second league victory for 2009.
The game see-sawed 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3 and finally 4-3 Knights way.
Good efforts all round with Leigh Harrison, Richard Kemp and Paul Thompson and the whole team putting in a good effort despite a few costly lapses in concentration.
An entertaining game for spectators with San Marco displaying a good intelligent style of football.

Was good in the Club Rooms post game.
Thanks to Eddie & Ann for laying on the tucker.

Next game, the long journey out to take on Dave Radford's Munno Para (my old back yard) will be one of the toughest tests for Knights, hoping to avenge their 3-5 home loss earlier in the season.

Some old photos over my back fence in Elizabeth Downs (Forestall Road) where Munno Para now have their home ground.
One of the huge dust storms that blew over in the late 60's/early 70's...Smith's Creek, the pipeline....my old back yard (excuse my indulgence.)
