In front of 14,448 fans in Adelaide Goodwin fired two of the finest goals into the back of the net you’re ever likely to see in a Cup final. The win means Adelaide become the first side to win two FFA Cup trophies.

There was so much to enjoy about the fifth FFA Cup final. A packed house at Adelaide’s boutique stadium creating a vibrant atmosphere on a warm night.

Then there was the football. An intense, fiery battle was ultimately decided by Goodwin’s two wonder strikes.

Adelaide United FC defender Scott Jamieson has agreed to terms with Hyundai A-League 2010 Champions Sydney FC, signing a two year deal.

Jamieson spent two years with Adelaide and played 49 matches, which also included a Socceroo debut last year, after being signed from Bolton Wanderers in England.

In his first season with the Reds he was crowned the “AUFC Young Player of the Year”, as well as the “A-League Rising Star Award” after taking the Hyundai A-League by storm.

Reds coach Aurelio Vidmar said that losing Jamieson to Sydney, was another step towards his football career and his journey of becoming a better footballer.

“We wish Scott all the best, he was great for us but he has opted for a new chapter in his football career, and he goes with our blessing. Scott always gave 100% and always played with passion” Vidmar said. ...

Adelaide United FC’s aim of breaking into the top six has become even more difficult after the Reds were defeated 1-nil by Sydney FC in humid conditions at the Sydney Football Stadium tonight.

A 49th minute strike from Sydney FC Captain Steve Corica proved the difference on a night when the Reds were hoping to put themselves right back into finals calculations as they attempted to score just their second win at the Sydney Football Stadium in nine Hyundai A-League matches.

United had reason to be confident heading into the clash, having defeated Sydney FC when the teams last met back in Round 11, while Captain Travis Dodd returned from a calf injury to take up a place on the bench. The other change was experienced former Sydney FC defender Mark Rudan being recalled for Cassio, who was out with hamstring tightness. ...

Cristiano fires home the winner against Al Ahly..jpg
Out of favour striker Cristiano scored a brace of goals to deliver an unlikely win for Adelaide over league leaders Sydney FC at Hindmarsh Stadium tonight.

Adelaide's hopes of victory took a huge tumble in only the 7th minute after midfielder Barbiero was sent off for deliberately pulling down Sydney striker Mark Bridge as he was bearing down on the Adelaide goal.

But 10 men Adelaide put in one of their best performances of the season to defy the form guide.

Cristiano scored the first in the 19th minute with a powerful header from a Scott Jamieson corner. His second goal came in the 54th minute with another header from a Scott Jamieson free kick.

Sydney piled on unrelenting pressure on Adelaide in the closing 20 minutes. Substitute John Aloisi pulled one back for Sydney after he headed home a rebound off the crossbar in the 78th minute. Adelaide weathered the storm to take three very crucial points that re-starts its season and pulls Sydney back to the pack at the top of the A-League table. ...

Travis Dodd - AU.jpg
Adelaide United FC captain Travis Dodd will miss Friday night’s blockbuster against Sydney FC at Hindmarsh Stadium with a calf injury.

Dodd has been struck down with a left calf strain, which he did against Perth Glory last Friday night during his 100th Hyundai A-League appearance, the injury sidelining him for The Reds’ highly anticipated match against the top of the table Sydney FC.

The midfielder missed United’s round 4 and 5 matches due to a right calf problem, and this time he has succumbed to a left calf strain.

“It was probably five or ten minutes into the second half against Perth, I just went to push off to chase for a ball with one of the Perth players and I just felt it tighten up and I knew after the game with how it felt, that it was similar to when I did it before to the other calf,” Dodd said. ...

kosmina-john.jpg
Sydney FC has axed their fourth A-League coach in four seasons with the announcement of the departure of John Kosmina.

The news was no surprise as rumours have been swirling around the future of Kosmina for weeks. It is believed Kosmina's fate was sealed more than a month ago with new club owner, David Traktovenko, having already lined up a replacement. The replacement, tipped to be former Zenit St Petersburg coach Vlastimil Petrzela, has been seen in Sydney casting his eye over the Sydney FC squad.

The former Adelaide United coach Kosmina has maintained a strained relationship with the Sydney FC squad. As occurred at Adelaide United, Kosmina has the ability to polarise both players and fans with a love-hate relationship. Many in Adelaide were happy to see the back of Kosmina but 18 months on there are now some who, despite his many faults, yearn for a return of his aggressive attacking style of football while Adelaide currently labour under its bland 4-5-1 regime. ...

Cassio AU.jpg
Adelaide United FC has jumped back to the top of the Hyundai A-League table and in the process dashed Sydney FC’s finals hopes with a 2-0 win in front of 23,002 people at the Adelaide Oval.

It was a night of South American flair at the oval as two of The Reds’ Brazilians stole the show, Cassio opening the scoring with his fourth goal of the season on the stroke of half time before Alemao made a certainty of the points in the 82nd minute.

In what Adelaide United Coach Aurelio Vidmar described as a danger game against a Sydney side desperate to stay in touch with the top four, The Reds proved they were up for the challenge and now go a point clear on top with games in hand on the chasing pack.

“At this time of the year it’s about getting three points. It wasn’t pretty but I think that we showed quite a bit of resilience, especially in the second half when Sydney had a fair part of the possession,” Vidmar said after the match. ...

Adelaide United FC has a chance to go back to the top of the table when it opens its 2009 against Sydney FC at the Adelaide Oval tomorrow night in Round 18 of the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 Season.

The Reds will face Sydney FC and former Coach John Kosmina for the second time at the picturesque ground, attempting to go back to the top of the table and continue Sydney’s run of three straight defeats.

With Kosmina’s men desperate to keep their finals aspirations alive, United Coach Aurelio Vidmar admits it is a serious ‘danger game’ for his side heading into a heavy month of fixtures.

“We know they (Sydney) haven’t had the right results lately but they’ve been playing pretty good football, some of their players that have been out of form are slowly coming back into form and it’s a danger game for us,” Vidmar said.

“We’ll need to play to a very good level and if we can do that, I think we can take the three points and really start putting pressure on the teams below us.” ...

Adelaide United FC has strengthened its defensive stocks after securing current Sydney FC defender Iain Fyfe for next season.

The Adelaide born defender will return to his home state and join The Reds at the conclusion of the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 Season after signing a three year deal with the club which will officially commence on April 1, 2009.

Adelaide United Football Director Michael Petrillo, speaking on behalf of Coach Aurelio Vidmar who is in China for the AFC Awards, said the club is extremely pleased to have signed Fyfe, and believes his versatility in being able to play in any position across the back will provide great benefit to the squad.

“We’re very pleased to be able to announce the signing of Iain Fyfe. To be able to pick up a player who has played in a winning championship side with Sydney FC, had Asian Champions League experience and still be only 26 years of age, was definitely one of the reasons we signed him,” Petrillo said. ...
