Gerrymandered Competitions

Gerrymandered competitions are where the results are heavily influenced by the rules.
On a scale of 1 being full competitive to 10 where the rules directly affect the performance of individual teams.
Near the top of the list has to be the AFL. The draft system and salary caps drives the long term results of the competition. AFL has a socialist approach to competition.
Formula 1 is not far behind where the rules are constantly changed to ensure there is more competition.

Those comps which have salary caps, drafts, uneven draws show that those that need to be manipulated probably wont last without such "rules", so understand why they exist.
Those which choose to stand on their own feet (open slather) don't feel their sport is under threat.
Bottom line, sponsorship deals and TV rights will usually win out.
AFL - tries to be fair BUT uneven and manipulated draws is where they fail (plus no relegation, and "reward" for finishing lower on the ladder)
F1 - they may try to change rules to make more competition but it seems to be those teams with the biggest budgets seem to dominate, so not sure that philosophy is working.

In F1 next they are bringing in a budget cap for next season in order to level the playing field as well as a completely different car specs. It will be around the 140 million mark but I think it's still being negotiated. Apparently Ferrari will get bonus money as a legacy bonus for being in the F1 since the beginning.
