Horrible news and was probably on the verge of a test call up which i feel he's been unlucky not to get for sometime now

bloody horrible news - got a fight on his hands for sure, got hit in a pretty bad spot from all reports, a lot of crucial brain matter in that particular area apparently.

all the best to him - talented player and on the verge of another call up to the australian squad one would have thought...

Freaky cabernet. He'll never be quite the same I fear. Fingers crossed he recovers to 100%, both physically and mentally.

The title of this topic could have definitely been taken in a different way if you didn't know it's context.

Did remind me of the David Hookes incident.
Hopefully Phil is OK and he wasn't in a bad place too long (ie not breathing-oxygen supply etc) for a good recovery. :(

Verge of a test recall? I believe his 2014/15 Shield average is under 30. Surely that's not good enough these days.

Oh and linking it to Hookes, even I didn't go there :)

Reminded me, but not in the way you are thinking...more to do with the way he collapsed...initially I though the damage might have been as Phil fell face forward onto the pitch,
Hookes apparently suffered his fatal injury when his head hit the cement after being punched.

Are you sure it was that high? I was speaking to a journalist from the Advertiser last week and we were laughing at people calling for his recall when it was under 30.

Sounds similar to your average of days banned for the last month.

Just passed away. Horrible to see a young man gone like that, but at least it was doing what he loved.

Spare a thought for the poor bowler too.

I am not a fan of the Australian cricket team (in fact far from it) but this transcends that. So sad.

Pretty sad at such a young age. Having played alot of cricket myself, could never convince football people what a tough game it actually is and the strength of mind and character to face up to very quick bowling with just a piece of wood and technique to use it properly.
RIP

Very sad

Cricket helmets of the future might be different to the current ones of today.

IMO the helmets should have a protection bar around the back of helmets to cover the lower back part of the head. They have it at the front of the head so Im sure they could design something to cover the back of the head.

Players do seem to turn their heads around at times when they do pull/sweep shots so there is always a chance the lower back part of the head could be hit if they miss the ball in the shot.

A very sad incident indeed.
R.I.P. Phillip Hughes.

When I read that it took 30 minutes for an ambulance...and then they call for a helicopter...you can't help but think a quicker response time might have changed the outcome...but we'll never know.
I guess there should also be concern about crowd safety when the ball sails over the fence with a big six.
Also, when fielders are in short with helmets on they nearly always turn their backs and expose the same head region when a shot is played toward them.

Could understand it if the first test got canned. Oh, and imagine how Abbott, the bowler, must be feeling. Tough times

I don't know about canning the first test, but I do feel for the bowler.

We have become ridiculously risk averse (thanks to the American legal system where it's always someone else's fault) and I would imagine that the last thing Phil Hughes would want, would be to change the game over what is just a freak accident.
