SOCCEROOS boss Pim Verbeek has vowed to spare Adelaide United's four World Cup representatives who are fighting competition wars on three fronts.

Adelaide's Socceroos Paul Reid, Eugene Galekovic, Robert Cornthwaite and Scott Jamieson have been lumped in an elite category of Australians playing in international club competitions, domestic leagues and World Cup qualifiers.
The fab four have already taken a beating because of United's overloaded fixture calendar.

They completed their seventh match in 26 days on Wednesday night in emphatic fashion by hammering Uzbekistan's Bunyodkor 3-0 in the first leg of the AFC Champions League semi-final at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Reid, Galekovic, Cornthwaite and Jamieson joined Verbeek's Socceroos camp in Brisbane last night ahead of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Qatar at Suncorp Stadium.

While Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar is set to hand United's squad a free weekend after the hectic schedule, the uncapped quartet will be trying hard to impress Verbeek. They join Scott McDonald, Scott Chipperfield and Jason Culina as Socceroos who are playing in three different competitions.

Celtic's McDonald and Basle's Chipperfield are playing in the UEFA Champions League, while Culina is contesting the UEFA Cup with Eindhoven.

Vidmar said Verbeek has promised to treat his Reds with kid gloves. "He (Verbeek) sent a couple of text messages and he's really aware of our boys and the situation they're in now," Vidmar said.
"He's not going to be stupid and flog 'em. He's going to have to make sure they're going to have to train and get a little bit of rest as well."

The Socceroos experience will give United's Australian players another high after Wednesday's adrenalin-rush victory over the Uzbek club, said Vidmar, who was capped 53 times and scored 18 goals for the national team.

"When you're representing your country, you're going to do everything you possibly can to get the attention of Pim Verbeek," Vidmar said.

"That's just a natural process. They're going to do it regardless. But Pim said he's going to look after them, make sure that they're well rested because he knows the importance of our (next Champions League) game."

Vidmar said he was extremely pleased when Verbeek paid United the ultimate complement on Wednesday night by making sure his Socceroos watched the Reds win live on television.

"They (the European-based Socceroos) probably heard about the A-League," he said.

"I'm sure most of them would have been quite surprised to see how far we've come."

An aggregate win over Bunyodkor will guarantee Adelaide a place in the Champions League final.

Adelaide doesn't need to win the Asian final to gain an spot at the FIFA World Club Cup in Japan in December.

FIFA granted the Asian Football Confederation another club place at the tournament which features the champion clubs from FIFA's six confederations.

Manchester United, Ecuador's Quito, Mexico's Pachuca, and New Zealand's Waitakere United have already qualified for the multi-million dollar tournament.
