Olympic recruit makes an immediate impact

Article from: The Mercury

CHRIS Tsimiklis, Hobart Olympic's new signing from Adelaide, is beginning to have an impact after only his second game for the club.

The 22-year-old left-footed defender played a key role in Olympic's 4-1 win over New Town Eagles on Saturday with his attacking forays and crosses from the left flank.

Both his games to date have been against Eagles. He made his debut for Olympic in the 0-0 draw with Eagles in the Summer Cup.

He scored in the resultant penalty shootout, but it was Eagles who reached the final rather than Olympic.

Tsimiklis is returning to the game after a year out with a broken leg, suffered in a game of Gaelic football after a clash with a goalkeeper.

"I'm still a bit unfit because I've had such a long break after my injury," he said.

"Slowly, I'll get my fitness up and, hopefully, do a few more of those runs down the left touch-line."

Tsimiklis was born in Adelaide and began playing soccer at the age of 10. He was playing Premier League with Adelaide Olympic at the age of 17.

He came to Hobart to continue a degree in medicine and is in the second year of his studies.

Tsimiklis met Steve Kaproulias, Olympic's president, at church in Hobart and was persuaded to sign for the club.

He has not seen many other teams play yet, but he is happy with Olympic's performances and with the standard of the game in Tasmania.

"It's still early days and I haven't seen many games, but so far I'm pretty happy with things," Tsimiklis said.

"We are a good, tightly knit group and, from what I've seen, we've got a lot of good players.

"We've finally started putting some balls in the net and it's looking good.

"We have a lot of fun at training, but on match days we're serious.

"We want to perform on the day, and we did on Saturday against Eagles. We did very well.

"We started off very well in the first half, but dropped off a little bit for periods, but we then picked up and finished our chances and did the job on the day.

"My main ambition is to be a doctor, and I don't know about a career in soccer."

Saturday's win put Olympic top of the ladder, but only until Sunday, when Hobart Zebras' 5-0 win over Taroona put them top on goal-difference

The lad disappeared midway through the season. Not sure if he didn't enjoy playing with the Hobart Olympic (they are a 'special' outfit) or if Uni just didn't allow him to train and play.

Olympic finished the season in third place though.
