Rover 1964 or anyone else with any experience in this - I saw your post about your lad having a bone growing injury as a 12 year old. Would be interested in how you think this should be handled. My lad who is also 12 seems to be having similar problems with his knee - can still run very well but often gets swelling - no pain as such. Advice varies from frequent icing the knee to resting him for the year. Much appreciated if anyone could help. I gather it is a common problem with this age group.

Rover1964, whats the best age to take a kid to europe?
My son trailed for a german club 2 years ago and was accepted into their academy.
We are in regular contact with the club and they want to see his progress.
Dont know if we should wait another year or two or go now. He will be 13 in august.
If they were still interested we would be prepered to move.

He may well have the same thing my son had, Osgood-Schlatter syndrome which is fairly common amongst young boys, especially if they play sport. I'm no expert but it's something to do with the tibial bone growing faster than the tendon over the kneecap and causing stress. I would get it checked out by a sports specialist but it's probably just something he'll grow out of.

Thanks for your reply Cyril - you were exactly right - Osgood Schlatters. Luckily the coaches are sympathetic and he can miss the odd training if he's too sore. Was amazed at how common it is. Got through the match ok on Sunday but he will have to give up on his other activities for a while if he is to continue soccer this year. Glad it was nothing more serious

So you took him, as a 10 year old, over there specifically to trial? or just decided to trial him at a club while over there??

Dont know if coaching U19s is considered a Junior Coach.

Couldn't ask to meet a nicer bloke and put his heart and soul into his coaching, so hugely unfair of you to come on here slagging him off anonymously.

I know Jim, he is a first class person and from what I have seen of him coaching (though not directly) is a very good coach

Though not directly do you mean telling the real coach what to do.

"Though not directly" I mean that he has not coached my boys before but I have observed him coaching in the past, have heard good things of him and have spoken to him enough to form my own favourable opinion of him.

Ps dont really understand your underlying inference re "telling the real coach what to do?

Anyway dont want to get drawn into a debate about the pro's or con's of a person jut thought it fair to voice my observations.

   Well the four times we played that team he looked like the coach and sounded like the coach. So if he was not the coach the real coach was very quiet and also invisible!

Great story & commets by Rover1964 regarding his son injury & THEN written off by SA state.
Then to roll the dice & take his son to UK & get picked up fantastic. Also agree obout Jeff Napier excellent with kids very calm & knows the game very well.
I think it time for more parents to take there boys overseas & really think obout State, Sasi ect fees & trips away fees & just find out where your boys are really @ regarding there development because all state will do is take you for one long expensive trying journey though the years your son is required with NO feedback,Easy money for FFSA

Is this an E&D Zone team? Didnt think there was any such thing as a Zone team in the FFSA any more.
