Regarding the calling out of your own, or teammates names during a game.
For instance, is it true that players are penalised for calling out "mine" when contesting the imminent control of a ball?
I don't understand the full or different interpretations of this rule.
Apparently, it comes under the ruling of unsporting behaviour by trying to gain an advantage by deception.
What I can't understand is what happens when someone with the first or last name of "mine" calls out their name when contesting the ball.
Of course, there are dozens of variations of this scenario.
I reckon most players wouldn't fully understand this obscure rule.

I'd like to know from ref's what their thoughts on this rule.
PS,,,,,,As far as I'm concerned, a huge part of a soccer game is the art of deceiving an opponent one on one about what your next move is when trying to get past them.

Never seen the name "Mine" as a first name.

There are no listings on whitepages.com.au for the surname "Mine".

You know my surname. I live in Adelaide. No one by that name is listed in the Adelaide white pages by that name.

It's not an offence to call MINE, it's an offence to deceive an opposition player. So, if no one is deceived - PLAY ON. On that basis, if you name is MINE then you wouldn't be penalised as you are not attempting to deceive someone. However, the ref won't know your surname so you'd get penalised for the first one.

Common sense would say that if my name was Mine then I would call with my nickname or other name or add something to it - MINE'S BALL.

The ref only needs to glance at the team-sheet to see if there was anyone with the surname "Mine".

He's probably not got that on him at the time of the offence and probably hasn't studied the name's before hand.

But he might - and might know from previous games he's reffed.

If my surname was "Mine", I'd probably have my captain mention it to the ref when he's taking the coin toss.

Cos history would suggest you'd have been picked up on it previously.

Do most players call out their teammates by surname though? Surely it's "Dave" before "Mine" - assuming his name is David Mine.

I hardly use either.

Could depend if there are any other Dave's on the team.

You need to talk more on the field maybe. Like when two teammates go for same ball. All you hear shortly after is "talk".

Luckily Mine sounds nothing like Bacon I suppose.

What if your name is Keeper?

I always thought "keeper's ball" was acceptable.

Hard for a ref to call it in a split second especially if a crowded area - is he supposed to know what everyone is thinking?

I am merely telling you the law. You would say that in this scenario it would be pretty hard to deceive someone. Even if there's 2 keepers in the box - one is effectively not a goalkeeper at that time.

I guess someone could scream, very suddenly and loudly, a person's name and "scare" an opponent at the same time. That could be deemed deceptive, but you could also argue he (say, the keeper) wanted to avoid his team-mate injury but suggesting he get out of the way, even though an opponent is nearby.

Had an incident in the juniors where the keeper called mine. Yes, he shouldn't have, but the opposition striker was 20 meters away and the keeper was signalling to his defender to leave it for him. So the act of calling out "Mine" had no bearing on the game and didn't disadvantage the opposition in any way. So based on that I feel some level of common sense should be used. Especially at junior level. Ref could have had a word to the keeper at the next break in play rather than giving a foul.

It didn't need common sense, it needed proper application of the laws.

But if you're an attacking player and your name is Keeper you could potentially decieve a defender, even if it's not intentional.

Maybe it was his first ever game?

And I do know of a Meins living in Adelaide, so he could have problems calling for the ball.
