Hoops fans should be careful what they wish for.

rangers out of the spl would be the death of the spl. That said a few of the clubs (including celtic) have said they would vote "new rangers" straight back into the spl.

This is true, I think mainly due to keep tv money where it is and not let it fall any lower, just be funny to see them crash and burn

But then the whole league will follow, surely you can see that, Doc. Not only tv money, but sponsorship money too. Gate takings etc... It would just snowball. Same as if the shoe was on the other foot and Celtic were in the mire.
I can understand Celtic fans enjoying watching them squirm and wriggling their way out of it, but to be that blinded by rivalry, to wish to see them go under, is a bit short sighted I think. What would Celtic be without their nemesis? What would you do? Just be happy that you are the horse in the one horse race? Doubt it. It wouldn't be long before you crave the old firm derbies again, and a two horse race, decent rivalry from within the same city, instead of your closest rivals being from Edinburgh. That's why I say careful what you wish for. As much as some hoops and huns will argue the point, I think both clubs need each other.

unfortunately the rivalry has its downsides as yes we need them for that, not much else though

chances are they will crash and crash hard, but people are waiting to start a new rangers as hawkeye said, they just dont want to be lumped with what will end up as prob 70 mil in fines and debt to pay out, hence why no white knight is stepping in ala celtic in the nineties

a lot of rumbling is that the sfa and spl what the two clubs in the english leagues so they can rebuild the spl in a two league system which has been floated a few times

only thing stopping it is getting a majority vote from the epl or championship

Rightly so. If they want to play in England they should start at the bottom.

we've had this before. Getting a majority vote in the championship isn't enough, they would need a majority of the 72 clubs in the football league and I just can't see that happening.

As for the spl, they'd be stupid not letting rangers straight back in. With Rangers gone even for 2 years then the league would die.

hence why clubs are saying yes, if only to keep what little money they get in tact

and that would be fine with me, a majority of the 72 clubs in the top 4 tiers of the game in england vote yes and they are in, if this were the case and the option was championship or premier league, where would you put them?

if they are my only options then I would put them in the championship. However, if I ran the league I would put them in League Two.

Scottish football would be better off without the two Glasgow giants. they should force their way into England.

The Clydesdale Bank wouldn't put as much cash into the league if that happened. Same with sky tv, then players would look elsewhere for the money they're used to. Sure, it would even the league up and create a champion outside of Glasgow since Aberdeen (maybe wrong again!!), but the standard would take a huge dive with the country's best players finding jobs in England.

Haven't followed the saga closely enough, but if Salmond gets his way with the independence referendum & Scotland leaves Great Britain, the 'Old Firm' thing of the big two into the English Leagues can't happen, can it?

ps GIAE, if they leave G.B. do they have to give the Trident nuclear subs parked up at Bonnie Scotand back?

The old firm moving into the English set up is nothing more than a pipe dream imo. England certainly doesn't need the old firm to enhance their league and I not sure they would want to be associated with the baggage that comes with both clubs. However if some sort of move for the old firm did come about would the same be offered to other clubs in Scotland?

On the issue of Rangers I have no doubt at all if a new Rangers were founded as a result of going defunct that the SFA and SPL would do their upmost in order to make sure their darlings were still in the top flight through any means possible i.e. changing of rules.

it's an interesting question, because they belong to the British Army. Also, what happens to all the jocks that are also contracted to the British Army? will they be immediately released and out of jobs? Will the scots pay for their release?

As for rangers and the other mob in the English league, I don't know the answer. San Marino and Monaco play in the leagues of other countries, so maybe they still could.

Some similarities to when Ukraine left the USSR? Can't recall if they gave up ALL their nukes to Russia. From memory no-one could account for all of them. It would be interesting what's left in some of the silos near Chernobyl & Kiev...

As a Celtic fan its always nice to see Rangers struggle as we did in the 90s, but Fergus came in and put us back on track.
A league without either one of the old firm would be a disaster for football in Scotland.
as for getting into the English league would be great but cant see it happening, moving us in would push clubs that have been there for years further down the table, Championship would be great but even starting in league 2 would be a step in the right direction

will have to wait and see i suppose  :|

Take one of the Old Firm out of the league and the whole lot would come crashing down within a year.

Other SPL clubs rely on their home games against the big two to pay their bills and the TV rights would be worthless without their biggest draw-cards.

TV rights money filters down and helps the other clubs survive.

I'm not so sure, after all it's all about money

Both Celtic and Rangers have huge supports not just in Scotland but around the world

Having them in the Championship could easily

1) Increase gates - both have huge travelling support
2) Increase TV money - put a few million extra viewers on the ratings

Given the financial problems of Football Clubs in general, it's not completely out of the question
