Are we still falling behind

Post by paul merson »

For those not on twitter, I came across this yeasterday, the instagram pic by Rob is of their lunch buffet (for the record).

First thing I thought was how much the game is moving forward especially when it comes to juniors, but hows this for a reality check / slap in the face.

Rob Cornthwaite ‏ My club provides breakfast, lunch and dinner to all players everyday from U/10s all the way to the 1st… http://instagram.com/p/fjYqNQvPuR/

Vlado So the kids don't go to school, or schooling at the club ?

Rob Cornthwaite ‏ live at the club and travel back and forth to school on buses all together. Training 6-7 times per week

Make of it what you want.

Nice example of a club really managing their young players though presumably for a sizeable fee, a key benefit is well balanced meals something that clubs here could do more to instil in their players/parents. The idea of a 10 year old training every day of the week is hard for us to comprehend but Korean kids are drilled differently and also go to school 6 days a week so it makes sense, with each day balanced between academic and physical demands, not sure how much time for fun though, maybe a little on the Sunday. I imagine they would sleep well (and early) every night! The concept is well outside of our current comfort or willingness to pay zone but you could see A-League clubs offering such live-in academies in the future.

you will also find a lot of schools in asia are just as strong if not stronger than clubs because the kids live there and train or 6-7 times a week ...different schools specialise in different sports...its a pride in your school thing the asians like.

lots of teaching/soccer jobs throughout asia...just need a c lic.

would this be a viable option for our clubs Godders? (im assuming we're talking about A-League standard here and not NPL). It sounds kind of like the old AIS set up? I actually think it would be easier to set up a school that specializes in soccer and have 20-25 students each year from junior primary through the year 12 that are there on scholarships. Get their education for free, AU/FFSA provides the coaching, they play in the local league as an 'elite program squad' and they live on campus and eat healthy. Would certainly lift the standard.

yeh in japan they incorperate training into schools and train 4+ times a week

the big clubs liase with schools because thats where you can find lots of..... kids! thats right, i had to think about it coz its such a crazy notion

adelaide united have not fulfilled their responsibilities when it comes to grass roots development. the fact this is just one of many problems is a big part of why our national team is so poor

i have coached at one of these so called 'soccer schools' - they are no better than the clubs though, they charge more because they say they are a soccer school but provide no more than nice new balls and getting in a person with a name from time to time. i was there about 4 years and saw no more than this

the A's coach was an aussie rules player ffs

cabernet needs to get real. we need a crawford report on junior development asap

There are a few schools around Adelaide now having Football as a subject, black friars, PAC, Norwood high, and a few others.
My daughters primary school does it for year 4 up.

Whats the standard like of the teaching? are these teachers required to have FFSA accreditations? do they utilise the curriculum at all. Surely the FFSA would be on board helping promote the game with these schools.

There's a soccer specific school on the NSW central coast. Looks fantastic.

We run our Academy at St Francis of Assisi in Newton. (Adelaide's Soccer Primary School)

It is no coincidence that they've just won the SAPSASA Knockout competition for the 7th year in a row!! and 12th since 1997.

I'd dare say there will be more to come as most of our students are in Junior Primary being coached by Claudio Catalano "before they are corrupted" as he says!

I have seen these boys play in a Sapsasa knockout final when they played Highgate primary school a couple of years ago - Highgate came very close to beating them with a team made up of mainly grade 6's. Highgate kicked a goal that was not seen as going in by the umpires or the result would have been different. The Highgate team was amazing and most of the boys did not play club and the ones that did have never been picked up for any development squads, etc and were coached by a parent who has never been involved with a club. They went through the whole competition without ever training together as a team. Their school only allows minimal soccer in the grounds as they do not have the space for the boys to play at lunch due to the number of students. Someone should have gone and had a look at some of those boys as there was an enormous amount of potential - some of them did not even play soccer at all.

SAPSASA results of the 2012 Boys Knock Out Football Soccer Large Schools.

St George College at Thebarton and St Francis of Assisi in Newton drew. Scores - 0 - 0.

Both schools shared the WINNERS trophy. :P
