Scam Watch - cryptolocker

Post by johnydep »

Dear Member,

All members should be aware of a recent scam targeting the industry over the last two weeks.
An email is sent to a business in the form of a traffic infringement notice.

The notice invites the user to click on a link to either pay the invoice or view the camera images.
The virus - called cryptolocker is an extremely destructive virus. If you click on either link, all of your computer files will be automatically encrypted, leaving them unreadable and unusable.
If you receive an email from “Office of State Revenue” treat it with great caution.

• Ensure virus detectors are kept up to date.
• While most current virus detectors are aware of this threat - exercise caution when clicking on links from unknown sources.

It is worth noting the virus is still in the wild and pretty viable. The prevailing infection vector is 'A professionally designed “Your electricity bill” email has been sent to thousands of Australians allegedly on behalf of AGL Energy, containing the total amount due and a button that says “View your Bill”. This message has the company’s logo in it and provides a replica of the organization’s Privacy Policy and other standard technicalities'. http://soft2secure.com/knowledgebase/agl-scam-virus
