Is that why Australia don't play in the Aussie rules international cup?

That's right, compare a meaningless contrived tournament to a World Cup. Fail!

A meaningless contrived trophy is exactly what those early world cups were. Thank you for proving my point.

Proves nothing of the sort. They are recognised by FIFA and the world over - seems you're the only mob that have problems with it.

So, PNG are the world champions in aussie rules then.

If you think so, go with it. The rest of the world know the score.

No Australia hockey medal for the first time in 3 decades - indicative of the MASSIVE fail by Australian Olympic team. Very disappointing performance. I expect that Channel 7 will now scale back their coverage to a 30 min highlight program on 7 Mate from now on.

Well, i think you're wrong but as long as you're prepared to accept that PNG and better than australia at aussie rules then fair enough.

Does anyone know what ‘repechage’ means?

All this week the commentators have been saying “And Great Britain qualify in first while Australia go into the repechage” Is it a special category for countries with an impressive post war medal count?

it is another heat for people who have failed to qualify. Basically a second chance for the losers

You think I'm wrong in that most people around the world recognize that Uruguay won a couple of the early WC's and Italy in between?

You may want to revisit that if it ever comes up as a question on Hot Seat. It could cost you a lot of money.

Same as people would recognise PNG as winning the aussie rules one as well

If its in the record books, then that's fine. Can't see anyone complaining about it.

Who's complaining about it? Or is not the bit you disagree with?

I don't think anyone is complaining, I am raising the point that no one considers PNG as the best aussie rules side in the world, the same as at the time no one considered Uruguay and Italy to be the best sides in the world.

To be honest I never knew there was such a thing as a 'medal table' until I moved to Australia. Then again I was never aware that TV stations wouldn't broadcast a sport if that country didn't have a world champion in it either.

Or.. just a lot better than you lot. Surprising really, especially considering the drug culture in Australian sport.
