Winter of cricket

Post by Stitch This »

Looks like a race to the bottom between the Poms and the Aussies.

At least the Poms are posting some half decent scores.
Time for some righteous indignation

England are 1-1 in their series with the 3rd game in the balance.

Meanwhile, Australia are struggling on the anniversary of their 60 all out.

England leading this series 2-1, with one to play.

If England don't lose then they will hold every trophy possible for them to hold for games between test nations. There are 9 available to England and they currently hold 8 of them, only Pakistan are missing.

Good turnaround by England after a shaky start.

That's a pretty decent statistic there GIAE.
If that's the case, then why wouldn't they be ranked No.1 given they have effectively won their last series against every other test nation?
I've realised as I'm writing this that just because they hold the trophy, they could have effectively won it a while ago and just have been drawing every series since then.

Mind you, I have no idea how the rankings are determined but given the stat you provided, I'd figure they would be close to No.1 if they haven't lost many series in recent times

I think we're currently 4th, we can jump up to 1st at the end of this series but it needs other things to happen as well.

Australia must not win their next test v sri lanka
India must not win their next test v w indies
England must win their next test v Pakistan

I can only assume that we're not #1 because we haven't won them convincingly enough eg. Australia would have got more points for the 5-0 than we got for the 2-1. It also goes on a 5 year rotation and I would think the last test series would be on a 3 year rotation. It should be a matter of time before we get #1 back as the dodgy results drop off.

Just looked again, if we win our next test match then we take the number one spot but would lose it pretty quickly if India win their next 2 matches v W Indies.

Whatever happens, Australia will have lost top spot by the end of the W Indies v India series.

.....and deservedly so. Cant lose to Sri Lanka (anywhere) and be considered top dog for me.

Actually, we have more points - so it would be us above you if you want to split the rankings points.

Funny seeing their captain going home mid tour. I wonder if the serial excusers will come up with something hypocritical for this one.

Bump

GIAE - how do you feel about England's result overnight?

Granted those pitches are horrible, but to be in a winning position and crumble so tarribly to lose to Bangladesh wouldn't exactly make your heart feel warm

I don't think it's that bad a thing to lose to Bangladesh, in Bangladesh anymore. Haven't been able to see any of the games but the series in 1-1 on extremely spin friendly conditions. This was also without Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad, Ian Bell in the side. Obviously I want us to win every game but Bangladesh (at home) are not the easy beats they once were.

Love the first one about the tweet, that's quite embarrassing. Could be worse though, you could have been able to have your entire innings within a tweet like australia could in the last ashes.
