England cricket board makes it tougher for foreigners to qualify for national team
About time.

The English cricket board has made it tougher for foreigners to qualify for the national cricket team.

The English have for a long time happily relied on members of its former colonies to strengthen their playing ranks at international level.

They have happily bolstered their teams with players from South Africa, Zimbabwe, West Indies, India, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Pakistan.

If the overseas-born players arrive after their 18th birthday under the England and Wales Cricket Board's new rules, they must wait seven years rather than four years to qualify.

For those that live in England before they turn 18, the period of qualification will be four years.

The English have come under fire for their system turning into a viable career path for overseas players that have struggled to breakthrough in their homelands.

South African-born batsman Kevin Pietersen is a perfect example of this.

In protest at the controversial quota system, he headed to England and five years after his county debut produced his Ashes-clinching century for England at The Oval in 2005.

Jonathan Trott, a British passport holder, played in the Under-15 and Under-19 World Cups for South Africa before making his debut with England in the 2009 Ashes decider.

The amendment allows for the ECB's discretion to reduce the residence period to four years for players who hail from a country which is a non-International Cricket Council full member or who arrived in England before April 25.

That caveat could, possibly, apply to Irish players aiming to follow the same path as Irishman Eoin Morgan.

The moves comes at a time when England is the world's No.1 ranked Test nation

England cricket's love of the old empire has reached new and greater heights, with yet another South African called up to its national team.

Not content with four South Africans and an Irishman clogging up its batting line-up, now there is a South African bowler as well.

Jade Dernbach has been named for the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lords, replacing James Anderson, who has been ruled out with a side strain suffered before England's dramatic first Test win at Cardiff.

Another South African, Jonathan Trott, was man of the match with a double century.

This means that just six of England's 12-man squad were actually born in the country they're representing, which must be some sort of record, even by the cosmopolitan traditions of their cricket team for over a century.

Captain Andrew Strauss, who was born in South Africa and attended school in Melbourne during Mike Gatting's 1986-87 Ashes triumph, claimed that having so many overseas players was the benefit of an empire.

Dernbach, 25, was born and educated in Johannesburg before debuting for England county Surry at the age of just 17.

He should feel right at home in the England team with fellow South-African born players Strauss, Trott, Kevin Pietersen and Matt Prior.

With Irishman Eoin Morgan recently replacing Paul Collingwood, only Alastair Cook and Ian Bell are England-born batsmen.

England's International XI
Andrew Strauss (South Africa)
Alastair Cook (England)
Ian Bell (England)
Stuart Broad (England)
Jade Dernbach (South Africa)
Steven Finn (England)
Eoin Morgan (Ireland)
Kevin Pietersen (South Africa)
Matt Prior (South Africa)
Graeme Swann (England)
Chris Tremlett (England)
Jonathan Trott (South Africa)
* country of birth in brackets

Can someone name all the non Englishman in the current England side?

I'll give you a clue there's only 1 and he's scottish.

Love how it mentions "south african born Kevin Pietersen", the guy is as English as ashton agar is australian and a lot more English than khawaja is australian.

I disagree with the ECB's policy though. My son would have to wait 7 years until he'd be eligible to play for England unless I move him home before he's 18.

Meanwhile cricket australia has no such policy.

How? KP was born in South Africa, Ashton was born in Australia.

Ashton didn't have to serve a qualification period to play international cricket for Australia.

KP is half English, agar is half australian. Both were entitled to their passports at birth.

The England cricket team represents England and Wales. However, under ICC regulations, players can qualify to play for a country by nationality, place of birth or residence, so (as with any national sports team) some people are eligible to play for more than one team. ECB regulations state that to play for England, a player must be a British or Irish citizen, and have either been born in England or Wales, or have lived in England or Wales for the last four years. This has led to players of many other nationalities becoming eligible to play for England. ICC regulations allow cricketers who represent associate (i.e. non-Test-playing) nations to switch to a Test-playing nation, provided nationality requirements are fulfilled. In recent years, this has seen Irish internationals Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan switch to represent England, whilst Gavin Hamilton previously played for Scotland – though four years after his last appearance for England, he became eligible to play for Scotland again.

Of the current squad (see above), Craig Kieswetter, Matt Prior, Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott are all South African-born but qualify through British parentage (though they still had to fulfil residency requirements Jade Dernbach and Stuart Meaker have British citizenship having lived in England since their youth, while Eoin Morgan is an Irish citizen.

You're getting closer, but only 3 of those are in the current England squad (let alone side).

England would love FIFA to bring that rule in, you might see a competitive football side at last.
