As much as it sickens me I agree with the POM, we shouldn't have declared.

I dont think anyone (else) would have either. Didnt alter what was a one-sided affair though.

moved to Brisbane.

either way, the development model in Aussie cricket is broken, and needs to be fixed.

I see England had an awesome first innings against the Kiwis...

Maybe they should have declared at 9 wickets down?

I think Cook considered it and then realised we didn't have close to enough runs and it would be a stupid decision.

I was actually about to post:

"come on, I'm waiting"

Tour organisers need shooting on this one, one warm up game and a 10 days of doing nothing in the lead up. The only thing saving us here would be an amazing bowling performance or the fact it's already day 2.

In bold - have to agree! Good laugh but.

Kiwis are 0/45 so who knows, doesn't take long to turn around a Test match, unless you are Australian (or so it would seem at the moment).

hadn't even realised that, panesar's good but it lengthens the tail having him there, less of a fielder and not as good as a bowler. So apart from batting, bowling and fielding, he's an able replacement

At the moment, he'd probably bat at around no 7 for Australia!

Swann's shoulder quite bad apparently, out for this tour and some doubt for early on in ashes. We can only hope!

Michael Vaughan's "tweets" are brilliant today
What is the definition of optimism? An Aussie batsman putting on sunscreen before going out to bat!!!!!
England are batting like Australia.... It's a real concern......
Fact.. England are not 1-0 down yet... AUSTRALIA are 2-0 down in India.... #justsaying

Yes, but at least beating India in India is quite a difficult task.

New Zealand on the other hand...................

Have NZ batted too long. 237 run lead and now off the pitch for bad light. Will they play again today.

That's only going to leave them 3 sessions to do the damage. They way we batted in the 1st innings that may be enough but that's assuming no more weather delays.

I would have declared with the 150-200 lead and tried to force a result. Surely with the 150 lead, they couldn't have lost.

150 lead 4 sessions. England would have to bat for 2 sessions to make the gap. Leaving 2 sessions to pass it, declare and bowl NZ out. Not going to happen.

The game should be a draw now and a get out of a jail free card for England.

that's what the BBC are saying as well but I thought they'd got it wrong.

Have they agreed to start a day later after losing day 1 to rain?

EDIT: I'm losing my mind here, that day loss has thrown me out completely. I really thought this was day 4.

England tour of New Zealand, 1st Test: New Zealand v England at Dunedin, Mar 6-10, 2013

Close of play
- day 1 - no play
- day 2 - New Zealand 1st innings 131/0 (PG Fulton 46*, HD Rutherford 77*, 42 ov)
- day 3 - New Zealand 1st innings 402/7 (BP Martin 17*, BB McCullum 44*, 108 ov)

England were dismissed in 2 sessions. NZ have batted for 4 sesssions. That's just 2 days play.

Doesn't help that the BBC is using English dates for the test as well. In that, NZ must be thinking about declaring soon. The weather forecast will be his concern.

Which brings up next point, should they build in a day extra if a whole days play is lost or is that part and parcel of cricket?

I'd like an extra day included, but really, it's just the rub of the green.

But given the professional nature (whereas before the 80's, players had day jobs they had to return to), it could be possible.

the issue will be tour itineraries. Players having to stay at places an extra day. Especially in places like australia where you can't just hop in your car to the next place.

Is it fair for example, to make the players have the extra day between adelaide and perth when you've normally got a quick turn around. Ok it's not likely to lose a whole day there, but you can't have a contingency in one country but not another.

I would probably err on the side of, that's test cricket. You need to be aware of weather etc..

caught the last session and looked totally in control. Was touching seeing Compton's family in the crowd and the emotion of his first test ton.
