WA put on 69 for last wicket to win by 1 wicket
Big bash v Brisbane last ball loss
Ryobi cup lost last 2 games - one win would have done the trick
And this!
wasnt the third last Ryobi cup game another 1 wicket loss too?
that would've also put them in the final

SA still remain 2nd by a very small NRR difference but could and should have gone top with a win. Now they need to win against NSW

Never quite cottoned on to the shield points scoring system - today's paper has NSW third, 4 outrights wins, 3 first innings wins, 2 outright losses and one first innings loss - 29 points.
Yet, Queensland (finishes second) has 4 outright wins, only one first innings win, and 5 outright losses - 30 points!

a much better season for the redbacks, and hard to believe they finished bottom.
Possibly the best ever wooden spooners in shield history!
In 1988/89, they made the final with less points than this year (20)

I can't remember a tighter finish to a shield season, especially in the shield final era (early 80s onwards).
Amazing how redbacks could have finished top or bottom after the final game.
So close.
But sa has a habit of missing out.
I still remember jimmy Higgs taking 9 wickets against a chappelli-led sa side in 1980 to steal the shield from us.

Can anyone explain how the above can happen yet? Maybe it was a misprint?

Something must have happened to NSW, because they have an odd score (where no other team does - so no ties), so maybe they were docked points.

Can only assume slow over rates, other minor infractions.........harsh penalties if so.

Reading the Shield table on their website, they received 4 bonus points too (and SA 2). Don't even know how/why that exists.

Queensland and Tasmania's points tallies are correct if you look back at their results... The annotation on the table is weird, and doesn't make much sense, as Tasmania have claimed first innings points (without then taking an outright) on three occasions this season.

Why NSW are on an odd number is tricky though, as the only way according to the point scoring template is to have a first innings or outright tie, which has not taken place at all this season.

There is a provision to deduct 0.5 points for every over short of the minimum required overs bowled for the match. Our theory was that they were only awarded half points for one of their first innings wins over Tasmania, as Tassie declared in their first innings in both games. This is probably wrong, although is the only other way in which points can be deducted after the fact.

That's all I can think of... Could be a good idea to ask Lawrie Colliver on twitter.

Is this an anomoly for shield points, while we're on the topic.

Say a team needs 201 in its second dig, to win outright.

They are 9 for 200 with one ball remaining in the match.

If they get a run, they obviously win and get the 6 points.

If they lose a wicket, then its a TIE - so they share 3 points each.
If they don't lose a wicket, nor make a run, then its a DRAW - and no team gets any points
(apart from the 2 points on offer for first innings lead).

Question: Is the batting team better off LOSING their 10th wicket (and tying - get 3 points)
compared to playing a dot ball (and DRAWING - no points)?

Yes, but they are better off again in making a run.

Yes of course a run is best, but in the other scenario that seems unfair.

The Hughes factor. Should see them through to the end of the season.

Do you not get batting and bowling points as well as victory points?

It used to be you got two points for a first innings lead and four for an outright win, six if you did both when I first came here. I think they changed it that you lost your two first innings points if you later went on to lose outright, but I have no idea what system they use now.
How on earth did this happen?

Fair enough for this game. Would have been pretty tough for all players involved.

Game should have been postponed until next year.

2 people at my work died this year, we were all expected at work the next day.

I have been on a cricket pitch when a team mate has died, we played the next week.

People grieve in different ways.

I can't imagine how traumatic it would have been to watch their mate die.

I'm pretty sure they asked to have the match postponed and the request was denied. Which is crazy.
