Law 42
3. The match ball - changing its condition
(a) Any fielder may
(i) polish the ball provided that no artificial substance is used and that such polishing wastes no time.
(ii) remove mud from the ball under the supervision of the umpire.
(iii) dry a wet ball on a piece of cloth.
(b) It is unfair for anyone to rub the ball on the ground for any reason, to interfere with any of the seams or the surface of the ball, to use any implement, or to take any other action whatsoever which is likely to alter the condition of the ball, except as permitted in (a) above.

Re third test, I assume winning the toss and sending them in was a plan to even up the match a bit? Good thinking. 294 all out in a day not entirely bad though and at least they outdid the Kiwis in Saffer getting all out before lunch on day 1!

IT'S official. Concerns are so great about the lack of pulling power generated by the nondescript Australian XI playing Sri Lanka today at the MCG that tickets have been given away for the opening one-day match of the summer.
With just three players from the Test team in Australia’s 13-man squad, fans are preparing to vote with their wallets by avoiding the opening one-dayer of the summer in droves.

It is shaping as the worst crowd to attend a one-dayer in Melbourne during the January holiday season since 15,000 turned up to watch Australia clash with the might of Zimbabwe almost a decade ago.

To try and get the crowd somewhere near the upper end of a 25,000 to 30,000 estimate, Cricket Australia emailed out a "special offer" on Wednesday evening to its many thousands of Australian Cricket Family subscribers – buy two tickets and get one free.

Sadly for those who didn’t scramble for this seat-filling offer, it expired at midnight last night.

But wait, there's more. The first 25 fans who turned up to Melbourne’s Federation Square for the launch of the one-day series last Wednesday "in their best cricket dress-up" also received free tickets for tonight’s game.

We reckon there should be a third category, anyone who can correctly identify photos of any 11 players in Australia’s 13 man squad should win a season’s pass to the Big Bash, which attracts bigger crowds at the MCG than one-day internationals these days.

Take the test yourself and see how many players you can identify from: George Bailey (c), Ben Cutting, Xavier Doherty, Aaron Finch, Brad Haddin, Phil Hughes, David Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Usman Khawaja, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc.

Here’s an idea. Instead of playing second string sides in Australia, why not send a second XI for the 14 consecutive one-day matches in England and India during September and October so Australia’s best can prepare for next summer’s return Ashes clash in Australia.

If Australia best players must rest at home let Warner play the first two games, by which time Michael Clarke should be fit, and allow Mike Hussey to continue until Shane Watson comes back from injury?

That way the heavily paying public and cricket’s multimillion dollar broadcaster Channel 9 will not feel quite so ripped off.

CA chief executive James Sutherland continues to insist that it’s all about the big picture. The only event that really matters is the 2015 World Cup, hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

If that philosophy is followed with the current fervour it makes every one-day game over the next two years no more than a development trial.

There is already a team for that, it is called Australia A, it costs almost nothing to watch these exciting but largely unknown cricketers run around, and almost no one goes to watch them.

Now Australia A and Australia have morphed, no longer can we call the one-day team THE Australian team. It’s AN Australian team.

A CA spokesman claimed it was "downright offensive" to call this one-day team a second string side.

Actually it’s downright offensive to the fans to call it anything else.

After that knock, I guess its now ok to call Phil Hughes a South Australian (didnt know till now that he was first Aussie to score a ton on debut in an international one-dayer).

He had a FUIC once, so he's a pure South Aussie ;)

Making the selectors think, that's for sure.

Only 12,000 at the ODI of the National team in Adelaide town last Sunday (13/1).

OK, there is a reduced capacity of 18,000 during construction of the 53,500 mega-stadium, but that 12,000 is a poor number.

Does that mean the stadium will only be filled when God-was-an-Englishman's Poms are here for an Ashes series, an ODI versus the ol' dart or one of those 20twenty things?

Seriously, ya gotta pinch yourself that:

(a) $85 million was given to that private company (aka the SACA) to get rid of it's debt;

(b) over half-a-$billion cost for the new stadium (and counting?), and

(c) some creative accounting has found $40-million for the footbridge over the algae-stricken Torrens puddle.

general admission was a sell out, the difference was members that didn't show up, and they have paid anyways

during the cricket season yes the crowds may remain low but the test match this season saw pretty decent crowds considering and was very profitable

the main reason for the stadium upgrade was to get afl into the city hence more spending in the city after and before games

That depends on how australia are doing, if they're losing and playing cabernet then no one will turn up. It's the australian way!

When did God cease to be English then? In my mind if you're born English then you're always English but I guess that's not the australian way.

It will be good, at least once a week they will leave that area now.

They wont be visiting at all now though - maybe the MP's involved lives around here.

Its funny when there's a Centrals or Norwood game on - you can spot the riff raff from miles away, even those that dont have their footy scraves on.

So you've moved from the east to the city now? At least you're heading in the right direction.

If any from West Lakes area come to town, it will merely enhance the place and give Adelaide a better look.

Mind you, we will have to be more vigilant about eastsiders trying to break into our homes and steal our cars when we venture to town, so there are some negatives.
