South and Bergers play out six-goal thriller
By Mark van Aken
Sunday 4 March 2007
Nick Sabljak and Ricky Diaco were the stars for their respective teams tonight as traditional foes South Melbourne and Heidelberg played out a frenzied three-all draw in front of more than 5,000 fans at Bob Jane Stadium.
Before the match was 23 minutes old, each side had goaled twice, South striking first through new signing Ricky Diaco in the third minute. Nick Sabljak balanced the ledger in 18th minute only to have Bill Natsioulas strike the home side back into the lead a minute later. Sabljak wouldn’t be denied however, his free kick again levelling terms in the 22nd minute.
Diaco made the most impressive of debuts in the opening minutes when the ball fell invitingly to him at the top of the 18 yard box. The former Gold Medallist casually blasted the ball past a hapless Pasi Schwalger in the Warriors goal. He would have scored again moments later if not for a superb Daniel Jones tackle on the last line of the Heidelberg defense.
Heidelberg would have their chance when Jim Drossos was felled on the edge of the 18 yard box. Nick Sabljak’s resulting free kick was seemingly being dealt with by Dean Anastasiadis, but the ball dribbled under him for the equaliser.
A thundering Bill Natsioulis shot had South back in front moments later when he found himself on the end of a beautifully hit Fernando De Moraes cross.
Continuing the see-saw battle, Nick Sabljak hit his second free kick and had the Bergers again level in the 22nd minute, while Anastasiadis was looking anything but himself in the South goals.
Fernando De Moraes would’ve sent the blue and whites ahead again shortly after half time if not for a classic Schwalger effort tipped the ball over the bar.
Minutes later it would be the visitors that would be celebrating when a sublimely weighted Sabljak through ball found Vlahos in space. Continuing a day he’d rather forget, Anastasiadis left his goal, proceeding all the way to the edge of the area, only to have Vlahos, who had been amongst his team’s best all game, round him and slot the ball into the empty net just before the hour mark.
New South signing Billy Jones earned the ire of both Sabljak and the referee after the two collided in the middle of the park mid-way through the half.
With less than ten minutes remaining in the game, Robert Liparoti used all his experience to shut down Natsioulis who had made his way into the area and was mili-seconds away from blasting a shot from close range. In a matter of minutes however Diaco would put the game on level terms once more with a deadly ‘turn and shoot’ inside the six yard box that was too slick for Schwalger, sending the blue half of the big crowd into raptures.
South Melbourne boss John Anastasiadis was circumspect after the game. “The way it turned out, we got out of jail really and we’re just happy to take the point,†said the former Championship striker. “We’re happy with Diaco, we brought him here to score goals and he hasn’t let us down tonight.â€

FOXTEL Cup Super Sunday Wrap
Sunday 4 March 2007
In a weekend where more than 20,000 went through the turnstiles at Round 1 FOXTEL Cup matches, Super Sunday delivered two 5,000-plus crowds on opposite sides of the city.
South and Heidelberg thrilled a strong opening day crowd at Bob Jane Stadium with a high energy three-all draw.
In a frantic start to proceedings, both sides had netted twice in the opening 23 minutes. South struck first through new signing Ricky Diaco, who finished with a brace, and again through Bill Natsioulas. Heidelberg’s early goals came from a pair of well struck Nick Sabljak free kicks just outside the 18 yard box.
The Bergers took the lead midway through the second half when a sublimely weighted Sabljak through ball found Andy Vlahos in an acre of space. Continuing a day he’d rather forget, South custodian Dean Anastasiadis left his goal, proceeding all the way to the edge of the area, only to be rounded by Vlahos who coolly slotted the ball into the empty net.
At Knights Stadium Preston Lions and the Knights played out a scoreless draw in front of an audience of around 6,000, while a late Hamlet Armenian goal gave Whittlesea the win over Fawkner in the dying seconds of their battle of the divorcees.
Green Gully prevailed at home to Western Suburbs, second half goals to Joel Nikolic and Manny Muscat were too much for the newly promoted side who were reduced to 10-men late in the game when Nikola Roama was given his marching orders.
