It will be OK on the day. I think that's what Arnie is saying

Arnold unfazed after Olyroos lose to Malaysian club side
Graham Arnold’s Olyroos were handed a stark reminder of how tough life is in south-east Asia when they were beaten 2-0 by lowly Malaysian Super League side PJ FC as part of their preparation for next week’s AFC Under-23 Championship qualifiers.
The clash in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday night was the first of two tune-up games in the Malaysian capital before they jet to Cambodia where Chinese Taipei, the host nation and Korea Republic await them on a heavily criticised synthetic surface in Phnom Penh.
An experimental Olyroos line-up didn’t quite gel against the locals, who are third bottom of the MSL six games into the season.

Arnold, who was without the likes of Thomas Deng and Alex Gersbach, declared himself satisfied with the exercise in the context of his preparation for what lies ahead.

Having made eight changes throughout the 90 minutes, he said: “It was more about looking at players who hadn’t played so much with us and some who needed the minutes.
“It was great ... the result was good from what we wanted and expected. It was their first game together as a group - and the two goals we conceded were about confusion.
“Every player lost four or five kilos (in the 30 degree heat). It was a learning process. We played well. We created a lot of chances and dominated the game.
“These types of games you lose and learn. But overall it was everything we wanted (heading into Cambodia).’
“The pitch wasn’t great, the conditions were hot and humid and the opposition had four good foreigners. We’re thankful they put their best team out. We had 78 percent possession and had 21 shots at goal to their three.”
Arnold reserved special praise for Italy-based winger Reno Piscopo, who made a big impression off the bench, saying he showed “Daniel Arzani-like” qualities.
“He did very well and is another Arzani,” he said. “He gets the ball and dribbles. He plays on the left and he did exceptionally well.
“I like the look of a lot of these boys but they need more game time with their clubs.”
He will be looking for more cohesion when his team face a far stiffer test against Malaysia’s Olympic team in their final hit out before the trail towards the 2020 Games in Tokyo begins in earnest next week.

Playing home nation Cambodia tonight in the opening Olympic qualifier in Phnom Penh. Cambodia coached by Keisuke Honda so they might not be pushovers.

Also in this prelim group are Chinese Taipei and South Korea and we’ve had barely any preparation. I’ve hardly heard of any names in this young side apart from McGree.

It’s so important for Australia to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Tournament in Japan because that will be held in TV-viewer friendly time zone of only 30 mins difference and the public normally get right behind all of our Olympic team sports.

Best ever Olympic performance was beating the Netherlands on the way to qualifying and coming fourth in the Barcelona ‘92 Finals, featuring the likes of Bosnich, Zelic, Okon & Mori in the Team.

The Australian U-23 National Team got their 2020 AFC U-23 Championship Qualification campaign off to a strong start in Cambodia on Saturday morning (AEDT), recording a solid 6-0 win over their hosts in Phnom Penh.

A good start. Honda maybe not so good a coach.

The Olyroos have scored six in consecutive matches, battering Chinese Taipei 6-0 to win their second AFC U/23 Championship qualifier.

The Olyroos dominated every minute of their contest against the Taiwanese, barely allowing the ball to travel out of their opposition's half.
Abraham Majok opened proceedings with a brace, before centrebacks Thomas Deng and Tass Mourdoukoutas each notched a goal.
Pierce Waring finished the game off with a classy double, saving one of the finest goals of the night for the last, shimmying past a defender before blasting into the top corner from range.

The Olyroos now face South Korea on March 26 in their final group stage match, with the Koreans - who put eight past Chinese Taipei in their first qualifier - also set to play tonight against Cambodia.
Australia can qualify for the 2020 AFC U/23 Championship if they finish first in their group with Cambodia, Chinese Taipei and Korea Republic.
The four best second-placed teams also qualify, while there is further wiggle room should hosts and automatic qualifiers Thailand finish in a qualifying place.

Hey Eagleman, this is it tonight (Tuesday 26 March 8.30pm) - the crunch match against South Korea. A draw is no good as they’ve scored one more goal.

ps, nothing anywhere about these qualifiers in the media. Even the earlier results didn’t make it into Lord Murdoch’s newspapers - nothing in the sports results “digest” pages of The Advertiser, The Australian or the Sunday Mail.

Its sad. Not much even on the FFA website until well after the event. I saw the goal highlights the other night on Fox sport. A draw will probably get them threw as one of the 4-5 best runner ups.
It is important for Australia's next generation to be on a bigger stage, in this case the Olympics. It was not that long ago that Fox would televise the junior national teams. Our game needs more promotion.

Damn! South Korea equalised 2-2 and topped the Group.

Now Australia run the gamut of runners-up seeding to navigate through the next round.

Luckily that draw was enough to allow Australia to be 1 of the 4 second placed sides going through. I watched a stream of the game. Aus dominated to go to a 2:0 lead but quickly lost that lead and went into a defensive hold that let SK to come back and draw level midwat through second half. After that, the Aussies came out and tried to regain the lead but 2:2 was a fair result.

One thing Australia has missed out this last weekend is having the senior Australia team play an international at home. There were a few friendlies on and one of the things Australian football misses out on is competitive matches to blood new players. Maybe would have brought a few dollars into the FFA kitty.

This is a good article relating to the National tea. Arnie has it spot on. A poor Socceroos will impact at every level of Australian Football

‘Big black hole’ warning for future Socceroos pipeline'

Australia’s player development pipeline has become a “big black hole” that needs urgent addressing for the sake of the Socceroos.
That's the blunt warning coming from Socceroos coach Graham Arnold, who doubles as the national U-23s coach.
He is deeply concerned about the player development pool below the national team.
The former Socceroo striker says Australia’s national teams need more underage sides if they are to keep up with the rapidly growing AFC, particularly South-East Asia.

This is just one of a shopping list of issues for incoming FFA Technical Director Rob Sherman, who begins late next month following a nine-month search by Oxford St.
Sherman has said he’ll review the existing landscape, to ensure world best practice for “elite youth development including resourcing and the requirements for elite national teams”.
Arnold is hoping this results in greater emphasis on age national teams, and he pointed to the only player over the last five years who’d gone through the current national team pipeline structure and blossomed.
“That was Daniel Arzani. It’s a big black hole,” Arnold concluded.
“And that black hole needs to be filled. I’m not being negative I want to be positive and I want to help the kids.
“They need games and development and they need international football. But if we’re going to be in Asia, we need to get in line with Asia.”
As an example in Asia, the Japan FA have clear targets, vision and regular games for all age national teams.
JFA run the men’s national team the Samurai Blue, and underneath that an U22s national team, an U20s national team and national teams for U15s, U16s, U17s, and U18s.
JFA also run a national U12 tournament for junior club sides and national University tournaments.
See more of JFA’s 2015-2022 mission here http://www.jfa.jp/eng/
Arnold took on the Olyroos job this year, on top of his Socceroos commitments, because he desperately wants to help bring through the next generation of Australian national team players.
He says he cares about producing the next generation, despite the challenges currently in the national team set up. He helped pilot the Olyroos through a difficult first stage of qualifiers in Cambodia last month, going unbeaten after a 2-2 draw with the Korea Republic saw the Australians qualify for January’s final stage of Tokyo 2020 qualifiers.
The challenge was difficult but made even more arduous given there was no existing staff in place for the Olympic team ahead of March's campaign.
“My vision, my planning has always been long-term,” Arnold said.
“I sit back and look at the Socceroos going to the World Cup and winning games. And how does that happen?” he asked.
“It can’t just happen by luck. We can’t just hope to find someone in southern Italy with an Australian passport and maybe pluck him out of there.
“For me, it’s got to be everything underneath the Socceroos."
“The Socceroos are the icing. But underneath the ingredients to get to the icing needs to be put in place, for the good of these kids, for them to get the opportunity to play international football and club football.
“I don’t talk about the Socceroos, I talk about the growth of the Socceroos.
"Because without the growth of the Socceroos, there will be no Socceroos.
“The players have to come from somewhere," concluded Arnold.

If only he had promoted youth when in charge of Sidenee, I might listen to his argument.
