Technical Director of the FFA Centre of Excellence at the AIS Peter de Roo says the Joeys participation at this week’s Nike International Friendlies and Development Academy Winter Showcase is vital preparation for next year’s U-17 FIFA World Cup in Chile.

3 games 3 losses for them.
4-0 Brazil
2-1 USA
2-1 England
What was the possession stats?
"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. That's why I succeed." -Michael Jordan

we were competing 25 years ago
now all i see is lowering of expecations
How much $$$$$ have these countries, and a lot of other countries around the world invested in junior development and grassroots football in the last 25years, compared to the Australian government and FFA ?
Shoe string budget will give you shoe string results
And yes stuckey, I am serious
Prove to me otherwise how the figures I stated above (which hidden in them show the $$$millions invested if football over recent years) do not effect how we compete on the world stage ?
So whats the point of playing games if the richest and most popluated countries should always win. Lets just open up a Forbes magazine and the rich list will decide who wins.
How many WCs has China won?

What was the possession stats?
Brazil - 203mil, #1 sport
England - 54mil, #1 sport
USA - 319mil, #5 sport
Australia - 23mil, #4 sport and a shoestring budget
People need to stop expecting miracles, and be happy that they're competing to some extent
15 years ago the joeys lost the u/17 world cup on penalties.
What was your stats then?

Love it
Name me which of those players became world class players seeing that was such a golden era compared to now?
If that gets too tough, name me any that played in the top leagues in Europe ?
PS. Greece also won Euro in 2000
PPS. Denmark also won Euro 1992 and couldnt didn't even qualify for it

Yep very strange example to back up an argument that its all about results in the underage teams. Another example is the 1991 team that made the semis of the world youth cup, and lost 1-0 to the eventual winners.
the 1999 squad produced 1 world cup player, kennedy, as well as 1 other who got a few caps and had a succesful overseas career, Scott Mcdonald
The 1991 squad produced 1 world cup player, Kalc, but did produce a fair few players who had succesful careers and long (but unfortunately, unsuccesful)international careers.
Results are great to see but at the end of the day, our senior team is what it is all about, and we need a very high percentage of our juniors to be able to step up and perform at that level. An under 17 WC will mean fk all if we stop making the senior World Cup

You brought up the results of the team against larger countries. How is it relevant?
So winning the Euro Cup isn't important now?

no...it means every now and then, stars and planets align for a very rare event....
Out of interest, when did Ange take over the Joey's and U/20's?

Thank you
So your u17 WC runners up argument which I'm assuming is about how we must of had a great junior development system 15-20 years ago has no relevance, because most of those players did nothing in their careers afterwards

So if the track record of development is so poor (as your numbers seem to indicate) why should we bother entering these tournaments?

IMO it's relative and reality to where the whole of Australia rates football as a sport, the funding football at grassroots and development levels receive here, and the time and effort kids put in in their own spare time
Sick of people bagging everyone and everything every time our a national team at any level loses

Do you answer for BPBC now?

You didn't say it was poor, it seems to be what you were inferring.

No, we produced some great players in the 90's, not so much in that 1999 Under 17 squad mind you, my point was in reference to the results being the be all and end all, which is what I took that you were trying to highlight.

It wasn't my point, I was more trying to point out that we have been able to match the top countries in the past and that doesn't seem to happen anymore.
Of course it's not the be all and end all, it just seems now that if (and it's a big if) we quality for the world championships we are generally home before the post cards are.
