NSW WINTER SUPER LEAGUE CHAMP.SERIES IS ABOUT TO BEGIN

Post by admin »

Fairfield City Lions coach Aydin Cetinay is tipping star striker Robert Younis will return to his scintillating best when his side meets the Northern Tigers in the Elimination Semi-Final this Saturday afternoon (Mills Park, Asquith - kick-off 3.00pm). After relinquishing his hold on the 2006 Winter Super League Golden Boot to Stanmore Hawks striker Neil Philippou, Younis is fired up to make amends and help his sides Championship ambitions burning.

"Since returning from trials in Turkey a few weeks ago Robert has been a little down on form but he has trained brilliantly this week and we should see him at his best," said Cetinay.

The Tigers will be no pushovers on their new home ground at Mills Park after finishing second in Pool B. Tigers boss Hugh McCrory has taken this side to a new level and with a bumper home crowd behind them they'll start warm favourites despite the Younis factor.

In the Preliminary Semi-Final between Penrith Nepean United and Western Rage at Garside Park (kick-off 5.30pm), a berth in the Major Semi-Final against Rockdale City Suns is on offer for the victor. United enjoyed the week off after finishing their schedule early with Coach Claudio Canosa using the time to work on his forward line after some well documented struggles in recent matches.

"The boys have been working hard to get things right and I am confident we can find the right mix to score goals," said Canosa. "I have always said that defence wins the big matches and I am very happy with the form of our back four."

Canosa is likely to start Johnny Ghisso and Brian Vanega up front while skipper Peter Bennett could be a surprise inclusion after recovering from a knee injury. In defence Paul Wearne is back after missing their 1-1 draw with the Suns due to work commitments.

The other team in the hunt for Championship honours - Rockdale City Suns, will be enjoying another week off after finishing in first place. The Suns will play a weekend practise match as they prepare for the Major Semi-Final on the weekend of September 2/3.
