heidelberg sniff at 2nd place

Post by arxidi »

A second minute goal from Nick Marinos was enough to secure the three points for Heidelberg at the Olympic Village last night.

Preston were forced to make two changes just before kick off after star keeper Savas Ozdemir and striker Nick Lazarevski both withdrew from the squad due to illness and injury alike.

The Berger's started the match off strongly and Preston only had themselves to blame as they went 1-0 down after only two minutes when Nick Marinos was left unmarked in the area and headed a weak header home past stand-in Preston keeper' Goce Gruevski, who hadn't played for the senior team for over nine weeks.

Preston’s only real chance of the first half fell to Marinos Gasparis, but his shot from the Blaze Georgoski's left footed cross sailed well over the ball and failed to test Louie Acevski in the Bergers' goal.

Preston began to work themselves into the game early in the second half and were almost rewarded on 57 minutes when Anthony Magnacca's shot was deflected to Georgoski, whose shot rebounded back off the post to the unmarked Gasparis, who could only watch in dismay as his effort was cleared by a fantastic last ditch effort by Robert Lipparotti.

With Preston continuing to surge numbers forward, Heidelberg captain Eric Vassiliadis should have made it 2-0 to the home side when his curling effort from the edge of the area just skipped wide of the Gruevski's goal. Robert Lipparotti was the next to miss an easy chance for the Bergers' after his header from only three yards out was skied over the bar.

Preston brought on young Goce Petrovksi in search of an equaliser late in the match and it almost worked, with Petrovski a strong presence in the Preston attack. Petrovski was unlucky not to equalise after his scissor kick went just wide after Magnacca’s strike from six yards out was stopped on the goal-line by the impressive Lipparotti.

Yusuf Yusuf should have sealed the game for Heidelberg in the final minutes but it was not to be, as some excellent defending by the solid Erhan Karahan denied the lanky striker.

Preston coach Goran Lozanovski was understandably upset with the result. "Some weeks we are just under the pump. We keep conceding silly goals…in the end we probably deserved a draw but that’s football."

Bergers destroy disappointing Royals

By Simon Chiarelli

Tuesday 8 August 2006

Heidelberg has continued its charge up the Vodafone Cup table and consigned Essendon to a dogged battle for survival following a comprehensive 4-1 drubbing of the relegation contender at the Veneto Club last night.

Taking the lead through Peter Roberts after ten minutes, a Lou Acevski error gave Essendon a reprieve when former A-League player Henry Fa’arodo scored and brought his side back on terms inside half an hour of play,.

However, in a night where goalkeeping errors were in abundance, a clumsy mistake by Joel Davey allowed Roberts to secure a brace before Andy Vlahos and Sebastian Petrovich completed the rout, sending the Royals into damage control as the season comes to a profound conclusion.

Although the home side peppered the Heidelberg goal early, with a daring long-range strike by Michael Catalano flying just wide of the target, it was last year’s beaten Grand Finalists that took the early lead after nine minutes of play, when Roberts headed home a corner from captain Eric Vassiliadis.

Minutes later Jim Drossos came close to doubling the advantage when his 40 yard effort flew agonisingly wide of the goal.

While Essendon maintained much of the possession, the side struggled for inspiration in the final third of the park, resorting to feeble long balls played from deep that struggled to penetrate Heidelberg’s sturdy back three.

After 22 minutes, the side finally found an opening and squandered a double chance as first Joseph Youseff, and then Fa’arodo were denied by the resolute Bergers.

But the side was soon rewarded for its persistence and found itself back on level terms, as Solomon Islands international Fa’arodo slotted a spilled Youseff effort into the back of an empty net.

Attacking on the break, lanky youngster Youseff brilliantly wove through the centre of the park before unleashing a pile driver that was handled appallingly by Acevski, dropping the ball into the path of Fa’arodo who made no error with the finish.

Continuing the abysmal night for the team’s respective custodians, Heidelberg re-gained the lead mid-way through the second half, as Roberts scored an unlikely second goal, punishing a howling error by Joel Davey.

Attempting to collect a corner mid-flight, the ‘keeper lost balance, dropping the ball at the feet of a grateful and surprised Roberts who was left with the simple task of applying the finish.

Roaming up front, Vlahos’ incisive runs were causing Essendon much duress while for the home side, Youseff performed valiantly as the sole target man, giving Royals fans a cause for optimism in the near future.
As the tempo of the game rose dramatically in the final 15 minutes, Vlahos finally caught Essendon on the break as his wickedly curling shot from outside the area deceived Davey in flight and flew into the top of the Royals goal.

The former Cercle Bruges player then provided the assist for the fourth goal with the last play of the game, playing a wonderfully weighted pass behind the defence for Sebastian Petrovich who obliged willingly, placing the ball past a hapless Davey.

personally i didnt watch any games (due to the geographical factor) so i couldnt really say i watched him play

however from the match reports that i read throughout the season and from what i would hear he had a pretty solid year..

rumours had it that a few clubs were after him and that he was likely to head to oakleigh or preston, but he signed on until 2008.
