Top of the table tussle headlines Vodafone Cup

Post by admin »

Oakleigh and Altona’s top of the table blockbuster and South Melbourne’s visit to Richmond headline another intriguing round of matches in the Vodafone Cup.

Round 22 signals the last month of the regular season with the Friday night action going down at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. South Melbourne drop into the Eagles nest on the back of a relatively baron run that has netted only one win in five starts. The form of the home side however is the talk of the town with Phil Subbins’ side seeking their sixth straight win to continue a remarkable reversal in fortune.

Buoyed by Wednesday’s win over Essendon – their first since Round 10 – Pines are at home to the Knights tomorrow. Fraknston stunned their opponents with a 1-0 win at Somers Street earlier in the season while the Knights snared a much needed three points of their own last week to keep their finals chances alive.

It’s a top of the table tussle at Jack Edwards Reserve on Sunday between the Cannons and Magic. Vlado Tortevski had a win first up in the Altona coach’s box last week while Stuart Monroe’s Oakleigh machine is humming along aloft the Vodafone Cup table. The Cannons had the edge when the teams met in Round 9, recording a 2-1 win at Paisley Park.

Green Gully’s Lazarus-like recovery came to a halt at BT Connor last week and they face and Essendon at home on Sunday. Both sit in the no-man’s land between the top six and possible relegation and will view the game as vital to their chances of getting something out of the season. The Royals won their earlier meeting this year 1-0 at the Veneto Club.

All of a sudden the Warriors are looming large with back to back wins as they host local foes Preston Lions at the Village, Sunday night. The Lions own a three game winning streak of their own heading into this week’s game which represents one of the great rivalries in Victorian and Australian football. All that will be on each side’s mind this week however is clinching a place in the Vodafone Cup finals.

It’s the Blues against the Reds on Monday night at Epping. Kingston City will start their first game with new coach Ken Murphy at the helm and they’ll be hoping to repeat their entertaining 3-2 win over Fawkner-Whittlesea in Round 9. Times have changed since then though; the Reds have won only once in their last eight starts while Fawkner are without a point in their last three.

It’s not quite the last roll of the dice for the Georgies as they travel to meet Bulleen Monday night, but a loss here would make their survival task sizable. The combatants have collected only a single win each from their last fifteen games (collectively) and both are desperate for points for different reasons as the Zebras still harbour finals dreams.
