WINTER SUPER LEAGUE FINALS RACE HEATS UP

Post by admin »

The Winter Super League Finals race heats up this weekend as Round 20 action gets underway. With just three rounds remaining the heat is well and truly on as a number of sides attempt to keep their finals hopes alive.

In Pool A Fairfield City Lions will put their title aspirations on the line when they host former Premier League heavyweights Penrith Nepean United on Saturday night at Norford Park (kickoff 6.00pm). Still struggling after their shock 2-1 loss to Fraser Park last weekend, a loss for the Lions could open the door for the Stanmore Hawks or Canterbury-Bankstown who are waiting to pounce.

"It's arguably our biggest game of the season and one we definately must win," said Lions coach Aydin Cetinay. "Penrith have been one of the form teams of the competition and if we consider ourselves worthy finalists we need to perform."

Cetinay will be without his big game striker Robert Younis who is overseas on trials. In the other Saturday game - Canterbury Bankstown will return to their old 'spiritual' home ground at Arlington Oval where they face Dulwich Hill.

In Group B two crucial games on Saturday night may help to unravel the logjam that is the top six. Group leaders Granville Rage meet the Macarthur Rams at Garside Park (kickoff 7.30pm) while at St. George Stadium the Vince Savoca coached Saints host the Sydney Wanderers (kickoff 7.30pm). A win for the Rage will keep them in top spot on the ladder while the Saints desperately need to three points to maintain pressure on the top three.

Elsewhere on Sunday - In Pool A the league leading Rockdale City Suns will journey to historical Arlington Oval to meet top three aspirants the Stanmore Hawks (kickoff 3.00pm) while at Fraser Park, F.C.Bossy Liverpool will meet Fraser Park (kickoff 3.00pm).

In Pool B Sydney University will play host to the Central Coast Lightning at Sydney University No 1 Oval (kickoff 3.00pm) while at Mills Park, Bonnyrigg will be hoping to overcome their shock 5-2 loss to Macarthur last weekend when they meet the Northern Tigers.

The Pool A action will continue on Wednesday Night (August 2nd) with Canterbury Bankstown hosting the Rockdale City Suns at Lambert Park (kickoff 8.00pm).
