Victorian Premier League

Altona and Richmond open Round 20 of the Vodafone Cup tomorrow at Paisley Park. A game that looked academic only weeks ago now shapes as a real test for the Magic. The Eagles have risen above the relegation pack on the back of three straight wins and will be confident knowing that they held Altona to a 1-1 draw earlier in the year at KB Reserve.

Its a 'Super Sunday' this week in the Vodafone Cup with no less than five games scheduled. Frankston’s survival hopes could be dashed when they travel to BT Connor Reserve for a ‘home’ fixture. Pines have transferred the game away from Monterey for business reasons, but it’s Preston that will be hoping to look the business on the field. The side’s last two meetings at this venue have both resulted in wins for Preston.

Oakleigh have won their last couple of games while the Knights have lost their last two. Further analysis of the form is more favorable for the boys from Somers Street however as they visit Jack Edwards Reserve on Sunday. Knights drew 1-1 with the Cannons earlier in the season, one of only six times that Oakleigh hasn’t taken maximum points, as well as 1-1 at this ground last year. The teams other meeting in ’05 went the Knights way 2-1.

Can Ian Dobson conjure up some more winning stuff for Green Gully when they host Kingston on Sunday? Cavaliers’ fans will hope so. It was announced this week that veteran defender Roddy Vargas would be moving to Melbourne Victory and the reigning champions will need to dig deep against the Reds. Kingston returned to the winner’s circle last week after a baron run of five games without a win.

Only one point separates Heidelberg and Fawkner-Whittlesea on the Vodafone Cup table and both are jockeying for a finals spot when they meet on Sunday night at Olympic Village. The Warriors trumped the Blues 2-1 when they met earlier in the year but they enter this game on the end of back to back losses, including going down to Richmond 4-2 at home last week.

Sunshine Georgies have been some what of a bogy team for South Melbourne since the blue and whites resumed Victorian competition last year. South’s two visits to Chaplin Reserve have landed them a 0-0 draw last season and 1-0 loss earlier this year. The two former NSL clubs meet at Bob Jane Stadium on Sunday night with the Georgies precariously placed in the bottom two. South sit at the other end in the top two and have only been beaten once in their last ten starts.

The round is concluded on Monday night with a battle of the co-tenants at the Veneto Club between Bulleen and Essendon. Bulleen won the corresponding fixture earlier on and neither side is flying right now. The Zebras motive is staying in the top six; the Royals must win to simply keep above the relegation trap door.
