Its a pointless argument to have though.
Winning something internationally far exceeds anything domestically. So AFL will never ever compete. Otherwise it would be like saying that winning the HAL is better than winning the ACL.
But obviously they would never admit to that.
But the comparison was Ricky Stuart (NRL) which does have an international competition and it's own world cup. By your reckoning someone who coached Australia to a world cup win in Rugby League or Rugby Union would be better than Ange winning the Asian Cup.
True. I would probably put winning a RL WC as just a big a moment for Australian Sport as winning the Asian Cup.
In both the RL WC and the Asian Cup Australia were one of the clear favourites going in and it was unlikely that any one but the top 4-5 nations would win it.
Ang is ok, but some people need to relax.
If he were good, he'd be overseas. Let's face it! The Asian cup was a tournament for the 100 ranking teams. Pretty poor standard all round

Best australian player/manager I'd go for Wayne Bennett
Bennett's accomplishments as a player weren't that noteworthy.

Wasn't much for him to have done back then.
I'm not taking anything away from his coaching achievements, however if you balance equally the coaching and the playing he comes up short in comparison to Ricky Stuart.

trying too hard to be provocative....
Who else can match his record? Trophies won as player and a manager.
Neeskens, though he doesn't match it - he blows it out of the water.
Game over Hawkester.

As I am using a VERY poor source I am happy to be corrected but he was only an assistant.
I believe he was a caretaker manager when Hiddink was unavailable due to his PSV Eindhoven duties.

As I said, I was using a very poor source.
So, for my next question. What did he win as a coach?
I believe he had a 100% record as Australian coach, what did Venables win?

A few FA Cups, semi finals of the European Championships.
So you get a trophy now for making the last 4 of a competition?
What did he win as a player?
