Glaring VAR error in Liverpool v Cardiff game , with Reds keeper Kelleher only getting a yellow for reckless studs up foul on the Cardiff player last night. Replay clearly showed keepers foot raised and his studs collected Cardiff player above the knee from behind.

I thought it was a red first of all but apparently Konate was the last man so no red and correct decision.

Ref, assistants and the Australian ref on VAR don't give it, so clearly no glaring error.

The issue is not the last man but the foul itself which was worthy of red card in its own right as the it was studs raised and made contact to the back of the leg and hence serious foul play.
.
What is serious foul play?
A player is guilty of serious foul play if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when challenging for the ball when it is in play. A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

The foul by Kelleher could certainly caused a serious injury and hence worthy of a red card.

In your opinion.

Harry Kane was far worse v Liverpool and no red.

What you think is serious foul play is in fact no such thing.

What you really mean is you want the rules changed.

From the Cardiff manager

He was frustrated that Mark Harris, a roving presence in attack, was denied a first-half penalty when Ibrahima Konaté nudged him in the back and in the box. But, with commendable honesty, he supported the referee Andy Madley’s decision to only book Caoimhin Kelleher when, some 45 yards from goal, he scythed down Harris. “I don’t think it was a sending off,” he said. “There were too many players around.”

Serious Foul does exist under Law 12

SERIOUS FOUL PLAY

A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.

Under that law Kellerher should have got a red card.

By the way I thought Kane was a red as well.

No change in laws needed just need to be applied correctly, given they have VAR no reason to miss them.

It wasn’t dangerous.

If he hadn’t mistimed the tackle it would have been fine.

Mistiming is no excuse under the laws of the game . The studs were raised and could easily caused a very serious injury.

You are clearly showing bias here.

Maybe look at photo in here.

The foul wasn't preventing a goal scoring opportunity as LFC defender was behind.

However the issue is the foul by Kellerher that was bad enough to cause a serious injury and as such warranted a red card.

I am sure the number of defenders is taken into account, and if there is a defender between attacker and goal it wont be a red?

I didn't think it was high at all, all this rubbish about studs showing is BS. How do you lift your foot without showing studs?

That said, he was off his feet, dubious if he was in control and missed the ball by a distance, so I suspect that any other player would have been close to a sending off, but he got away with it because he is a keeper. We all know they're judged by different standards, poor little loves. ;-)

I also think as long as you get the ball it’s no foul, however hard and studs up you go in - but many disagree due to the risk of causing injury. To me its the risk you take - get the ball - all ok. - miss it and get a red!

Just getting the ball doesn't protect you from punishment , for example if you jump in two footed one foot gets the ball the other foot collects the other player then it would be a foul and potential red card. As for studs up that is rightly out of the game after all you don't want see a players career destroyed.

Imagine the likes of Norman Hunter, Ron Harris and Tommy Smith playing now.

First up, it's a contact sport and some accidental injuries are part and parcel of the game, however nobody wants to see a youngster out for months with a broken leg, so there has to be a middle ground. My personal view is that head on tackles with a leading leg where, even if you get the ball, your momentum carries you into the player with real force, are a thing of the past and that's mostly a good thing. However, anything where your direction of travel doesn't take you directly into the other player, such as trying to block a shot, should probably be let go, but refs just see a player off their feet and give a free and a card of some description.
