Murty 'Hurty'

Post by thebeautifulgame »

Tom Rogic again showed why he will surely be in demand when his contract ends at Celtic with yet another fine finish against Rangers. Rangers capitulated 0-4 against a rejuvenated Celtic side that were dominant from the off. Prior to the game Rangers fans eagerly anticipated giving Celtic a run for their money and recent results suggested that they were capable of stretching Celtic, following on from their narrow 2-3 defeat to Celtic on March 11th.
How foolish they look now (more so Rangers Football Club than the fans themselves). Graeme Murty for all his reasonable efforts previously, chose to go public and reveal his players roared in approval when they drew their bitter rivals Celtic in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup. Huge mistake on Murty's behalf and this showed his lack of respect to Celtic and Brendan Rodgers. Murty's mind games backfired big time as his team crumbled with Celtic picking them off at will. Rodgers would not have required to deliver much motivation to his players other than to remind them of the pathetic howls and false cries of a weaker opponent. It proved once again that this team (under three different managers) can talk the talk but can't walk the walk. Whilst in stark contrast at Celtic Park Rodgers keeps his pride, dignity and 10 game unbeaten record over his rivals intact. Difference in class and respect of what Rodgers has not only achieved but in the manner he goes about his day to day business.
As for Rangers- where does one start? Murty tried to contain Celtic in centre of midfield by flooding it but this afforded Celtic time to build from the back (under no pressure) and play wide in to gaping spaces. Rangers invited Celtic to come at them and were woefully poor in possession. Celtic basically dominated from start to finish and Rangers were a shambles. Andy Halliday was substituted in the 41st minute and vented his fury at management as he left the field as did Daniel Candeias during the second half. At full-time there was an altercation between Rangers' players Greg Docherty and Alfredo Morelos, which peacekeeper for the day Bruno Alves had to break up. Worse yet to follow in the Rangers' dressing room as Lee Wallace (club captain but dropped) and Kenny Miller (also dropped) verbally attacked Murty with tempers flailing. Reports in the media strongly suggest that Murty did not reply but meekly went to the hierarchy to report the players and outcome would be a suspension of both players.
So as an avid Celtic supporter why should I care about Rangers? Because the game in Scotland needs stiff competition at a decent level so the standard can improve. Dominance by one team over several seasons is only good for one team in a domestic environment only but in the echelons of European football it becomes insignificant. Lambs to the slaughter comes to mind.
Dave King (Rangers F.C. Chairman) should be held accountable for his actions. Prior to the semi-final v Celtic he stated that the club were actively seeking a coach to take them forward and thanked the stand-in manager (Murty) for his efforts. This was a cowardly act as he undermined not only the temporary manager but tainted the club itself. This act was merely to encourage their supporters to buy season tickets for next year (false promises) prior to the game and in doing so threw him (Murty) under the bus. This was a vote of no confidence as King expected them to fail against Celtic, if not he would have made this statement after the game. The hiring of Murty was the cheap option and for a spell it looked like it may well pay off, but ultimately his inexperience and lack of support from the board will lead to his resignation/sacking.
Big question is who do they hire now and who would (keeping their reputation intact) fancy it? Answers on a postcard please.
Finally, back to Celtic. I believe that securing Kieran Tierney long term means that Rodgers is in no hurry to leave and they may be sticking around as '10 in a row' is the prime motivation. Tierney turns 21 years of age in June and he will make it big in the EPL when it suits him and Rodgers to find pastures new. Don't be surprised if they end up at the same club around year 2022!
