Refereeing The World Game

Post by swannsong »

Have you ever noticed how referees have gotten 'so much worse' now that we have technology to pick out and replay their 'errors' ?

TV always shows the players' good highlights and the referees' bad highlights (or lowlights perhaps). It would be interesting to turn it on it's head once in a while.

More of a worry for me is the way the governing body seems to be instructing them to officiate the games. The LOTG haven't changed substantially in my lifetime, but it's gradually becoming a non-contact sport, especially over here.

Unfortunately, 100% correct. There's a thread on here somewhere where someone said something like - "so much for it being a non contact sport". :(

As much as despise a lot of referees, I must admit the game has become so fast and players cheat far more than they did ten years ago and they now even practice how to dive in the box during normal club training.

But it is still up to the refs to keep up with what is happening within the clubs and to talk to each other and exchange information on who the cheaters are.

They need to develop relationships with Linesmen and work out ways to catch the cheats 'Red Handed' and punish them with cards.
The older I get the better I was.

Great refereeing in the Chelsea v Norwich cup tie.

Booked two Chelsea players for diving in the box, both of whom got sent off for further offences :D

Conte's going ballistic  Maybe he should tell them to stop falling over.

On the contrary, maybe less of the challenge contact in tackles, but the man handling, shirt pulling, especially in the box is a laugh these days !

You're beginning to sound like Orifice!

But yes, it seems to have crept into the game but way too much use of the hands is allowed by the officials, yet the shoulder barge has just about been outlawed. Grabbing someone, even for a second, to slow them down or hold them back, is a foul according to the LOTG. As with everything in football, the Laws don't need changing, just the interpretation.

Totally understand that the grabbing and deliberate obstruction that we see is unlawful according to LOTG, so it must be either the individual referees becoming more lenient, or the 'directives' they receive from governing bodies that allows it to continue on unabated.

You'd have to ask a current ref if they're told to ignore it, but it's the old story of "give 'em and inch and they'll take a mile". Over the years, FIFA have allowed players to get away with more and more use of the hands and we're now so far away from the start point it'll be a huge task to reverse it.

Mancini appointed Italy head coach

Former Manchester City and Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini has been given the job of reviving the fortunes of Italy's national team.

Italy have been without a permanent coach since Gian Piero Ventura was sacked after the four-time world champions failed to qualify for this summer's World Cup for the first time in 60 years after losing a playoff to Sweden last November.

The 53-year-old's task will be to rebuild the national side and to qualify for the 2020 European championship.
