England have slipped so far that they have to measure themselves against a developing football nation. They have to do that because so many European and South American nations have gone past them.

Developing, ha ? Australia’s been playing football for over 100 years. Just coz they’ve kept bottle of shiraz it up with incompetence, corruption and nepotism doesn’t give them the right to permanent developing status.

England on the other hand. New cohesive (??) playing style, new young manager, very young team yet still undefeated and top of their group. Even using a makeshift side with most of the better players out injured.

See comparing England to Australia again.

Be interesting to see what role Southgate has for Rooney in the upcoming match against Scotland, especially as he is virtually frozen out of Man U starting XI.

As a passionate Scot it pains me to say that an average England team is still capable of beating us comfortably (especially at Wembley, unless they are loaded with Spurs players  ). Seriously the best that Scotland can hope for is to make it a battle and get England frustrated and down to our level as we lack genuine class. Brown in midfield (if passed fit) will battle all day but this will surely see him see a yellow or possibly a red if his aggression is not disciplined. If England get sucked in to a scrap Scotland may snatch a draw but I seriously doubt it.
On another note (apologies if it has been covered previously) I think it is disgraceful that FIFA have forbidden the wearing of poppies on the shirts of both sides as it is deemed to be a political message. This meeting falls on the 98th Anniversary of Armistice/Remembrance Day and both England and Scotland had approached FIFA to express that they wished to display a poppy emblem on their shirts as a mark of respect. FIFA rejected this proposal and both England and Scotland have reportedly agreed to wear a poppy on armbands (common sense solution you would think) but FIFA have stated this could result in hefty fines or even points deducted. Wear the poppy boys and let FIFA flex their muscles. Personally wouldn't mind seeing a 1-1 scoreline as it would tie in with 11th hour, 11th day and 11th month.

Very sad that FIFA sees poppies as political, as Remembrance Day is very moving and special day to millions of people all over the world.

WELL SAID!

FIFA have in the past allowed political statements. Previously the poppy on the armband was deemed acceptable, no complaints (until they realised the hypocrisy) of the Ireland easter rising shirts, no complaints about "Kick Racism Out", no complaints about argentina behind a banner claiming ownership of the Falklands.

I totally agree that they shouldn't allow political statements, football should not be abused in that way, but I'm really struggling to understand the political statement that is remembering the bravery of the millions that died on the Western Front.

The scoreline initially flattered England but as the game wore on the result reflected their superiority as Scotland ran out of legs and ideas. Southgate will be pleased with the result though the performance was patchy, particularly the poor passing from the English defence as against a better team they would have been punished for their sloppiness. Thought the Referee was inconsistent when dealing with fouls for both sides and pulled up a lot of soft ones (if they were fouls at all). The big one he missed (or rather chose to ignore) was the lunge on the edge of the box by Rose on Snodgrass. Certain caution and Free kick or Penalty yet he pulls up nothing challenges in the middle of the park. Brown also fortunate to escape a yellow all day long. All said and done Scotland got what they deserved from the game-nothing. Strachan IMO will now walk sooner rather than later but the main problem is the dearth of quality in his squad. Many years ago a few Scottish supporters claimed that Dalglish wasn't fit to wear the Scotland jersey- that opinion becomes more embarrassing as the years roll on. How we could do with anyone remotely near his level at this point in time. And while I am on the word embarrassing, what about those awful pink strips!
On a positive note was happy to see the players wearing the poppy for all to see and the fans in general behaving themselves. Well done to the English and Scottish Football Associations for having the balls to ignore FIFA's wishes, hopefully they will wave any potential sanctions and concentrate on more serious matters.

Scotland only had 2 chances and they should have done better with both of them. England never looked like losing and controlled the game without looking that dangerous.

Pity the Scotland fans felt the need to throw things in the pitch.

shiraz FIFA, proud that both sides wore the poppy.

Point one I have to disagree. Scotland had numerous chances to score but I suppose it is the interpretation of what is deemed to be a chance to score. England did not control the game until the second goal went in as it knocked the wind out of Scotland. Anyhow it was all pretty much insignificant in the end and as I said no complaints about the outcome.
The other two points I totally agree with.

Tomorrow I am going to my doctor to check out my mental health as I have agreed with two thirds of a post written by GIAE!

How bad have Scotland sunk, surely its worst squad ever. The days when Scotland produced world class players like Dalglish, Law, Baxter and Co, seem long gone.
