Talk is Allardyce to be named in the next 24 hours. An ex Millwall player, I'm happy enough with that. A proper manager who won't take any cabernet.

as long as they play an English style game then I'll be happy. If you're going to lose, why lose playing cabernet possession for the sake of it football.Brian the Postman wrote:Probably won't take any points off anyone either.God is an Englishman wrote:Talk is Allardyce to be named in the next 24 hours. The club in your signature is the best example of what I'm talking about. Played possession for possessions sake and it got them to the bottom of the table. Changed it, played a touch more direct and they won the league.

Agree GIAE - possession is all very well but if the possession doesn't result in shooting it's ineffective.
There's nothing genius about not giving away possession - it's been taught to kids by the most basic coaches for decades.
I would also like to see England play to their strengths and not try and imitate someone else's style.

They didn't change that style and went a touch more direct?
They didn't win the league?

When I coached, I encouraged players to keep the ball. That's obvious really.Old Redback wrote:Agree GIAE - possession is all very well but if the possession doesn't result in shooting it's ineffective.

But exactly right, look at England v Iceland. Dominated possession, had less shots, lost the game.

@ Hawksey
they played possession for a reason even if it meant conceding 'silly' goals trying to play out the back....but you'll need to have an understanding why Gombau insisted on it (this has been explained ad nauseum). they also played a high line for a reason which meant they were prone to the counter attack.
yes, Amor tweaked the system but its still a possession style being played.
and yes....they won the championship playing a possession based game....
considering youve watched a handful of games since 'the revolution' began at Adelaide, i cant believe you pinging your reputation on hearsay and media articles....

You think I care about my reputation on here. I can count on one hand the people who actually understand the game.

Sadly for you, you aren't one of them.
Now Big Sam has been appointed we will soon find out the answer as to whether he will succeed or not.
Personally, I think he will do a lot better than any England manager since 1966.
The older I get the better I was.

Bearing in mind the count was being made by me, once again you're wrong. I counted myself.Old Master wrote:God is an Englishman wrote:You think I care about my reputation on here. I can count on one hand the people who actually understand the game.

My club in the picture, didn't write off their season after being bottom.

That's why England hasn't won anything in over 50 years!

To do 'a lot better' than Robson or Venables, he'll have to win a tournament. I don't see that happening.Old Master wrote:God is an Englishman wrote:You think I care about my reputation on here. I can count on one hand the people who actually understand the game.

Were your lot bottom playing possession for possessions sake football?
Did they adjust the style?
Did they then win the league?
Have England won the World Cup inside the last 50 years?

^^^^^^^^why do you continue to embarrass yourself...l
as for England...they provide comic relief every 2 years....a country gets the govt it deserves, this also applies to its national coach...however, like you, i applaud the decision to appoint an English coach. Were your lot bottom playing possession for possessions sake football?....yes, it took time to learn it and apply it in Gombau's first year
Did they adjust the style?.....yes....and we were still bottom in Amor's first year....it took time to learn and adjust
Did they then win the league?....yes, with a possession style game

Re: Who replaces Roy as England Manager?
In defence of Big Sam, he may not have won anything but he's never been given the job at a club with the players & resources to do that.
Maybe, just maybe, he will be able to get the English players to play for England with the same passion they play for their clubs?
Only Alf Ramsey has managed that to date, so hopefully he can do the same?
