Don't think they had much of a choice, you can't go around punching someone. Having said that, I'd be in favour of tackles from behind, where it is impossible to get the ball, attracting an automatic yellow card. You're not going for the ball, you're kicking the bloke in the ankles and calves and it's as deliberate as punching him in the guts, just better disguised.

How many players get between an opponent and the ball with intention of playing the ball?

Relevant how? You learn to control the space around the ball.

If you deliberately get between a player and the ball without any intention of playing it that's obstruction. If referees won't pull it up then the other player should have to right to attempt to play it.

Really?

Please continue I want to hear more. Anyone deliberately between the player and the ball is guilty of obstruction.

They are when they sheppard a ball out of play with no intention of playing it.

Even then, so long as the ball is within controllable distance, you're deemed to be in control and it's fine, you don't have to touch it. Which is what I mean about controlling the space around the ball, a concept that's alien to many players.
