R.I.P. Jimmy Hill

Post by swannsong »

Jimmy Hill and Brian Moore were my introduction to football as a lad.
Match Of The Day was the only real source of British Football action on TV in Adelaide back in the 60s and 70s.

+1

Every modern footballer earning a fortune should contribute something to charity in his memory. It was his chairmanship of the PFA that paved the way for them to all be multi millionaires.

RIP Jimmy. I liked ol' square-jaw.

Conservatives on here would not have liked his push for 3 points for a win instead of 2, keeping it at only 1 point for a draw.

Loved the Benny Hill skits taking Jimmy off - as they say imitation is a high form of flattery.

Jimmy Hill was the man who made Football, particularly in the UK, the force it is today on TV and in the media.

His time as head of the PFA led to the end of fixed slave wages and enabled Footballers to get their fair share of money the game was making.

Club chairmen used to treat players like slaves back in those days and Jimmy took them on and broke their hold over the game.

He also pushed for better spectator conditions as they too had to put up with crap facilities.

RIP Jimmy - a Life Well Lived!

Bosman did more to help that than Jimmy Hill did.

Treated like slaves - that's a disgusting insult

Can't agree, Bosman was always going to happen, it just happened to be him.

Completely agree that it just happened to be him but he sacrificed a fair bit to get it.

I'm intrigued though - how much does a slave earn?

Downloaded a show called match of the 70s a few years back. Each show did one year of match of the day through to 1980. Great stuff even though dennis waterman is in it

There would be a lot of footballers from that era who would agree with me.

Only the really best players got good money in those days despite the clubs raking in the money from big crowds.

The average player, even in Div ! was paid a little more than the average factory worker and had little hope of getting another job if they got injured.

When I played in France & Holland, even as a kid, I was getting a lot more than any of my mates who were playing 1st team in Div 1.

I was only playing Div 2 over there.
The older I get the better I was.

Now many earn more in one year than a factory worker earns in a lifetime.

Funny old world innit.

How much do slaves earn?

Were you forced to work in chains?
Were your family forced to work in chains?
Were you allowed to go and get a job somewhere else (say in that factory) if you so chose.

The fact you said you were paid more than the average factory worker shows just how idiotic your comments were.

Jimmy got rid of the maximum wage, which many were on. More than he makes out
the downside is less local players in teams.
