Why are goalkeepers......

Post by Nice One Cyril »

.... so effing useless with the ball at their feet?

After Tim Krul's dismal pass to Ashley Young, I've come to the conclusion that the majority of keepers are actually clueless footballers.

They're goalkeepers for a reason. :P
I'm not playing anymore and I'm taking my ball and going home.

Does that mean if a striker is poor with his hands he's a rubbish footballer?

You're slipping, that's a seriously poor effort.

Well a keeper's main job is with his hands but he's still a footballer.

With the ball at their feet, some of them look like they're practising their disco moves, so one could argue that point.

What are the strikers like with ball heading towards the top corner of the goal?

He just happened to be the one I saw last, but I'm staggered by the lack of foot skills and composure shown by so many professional keepers.

Your Keeper started it.

Thorstvedt, the 'back pass rule' came in, and he couldn't kick. The beginning of the end for him.

Equivalent to drummers in a band. Not real musicians, but still necessary.

Goalkeepers are far more important than outfield players.

Another 9 players can help an outfield player!

Sounds like the old joke what do you call the guy who hangs out with musicians?

Answer: A drummer.

Drummer...I thought the answer was bass player :D
Not sure if the back pass rule has ever achieved anything other than create more confusion....
However, foot skills are not covered enough (if at all) in most of the goalkeeper drills I have ever seen.

How dare you?
If anything the backbone of any band is a bass player and a drummer who can work well together.

I'm an individual playing a team sport.
I too use the drummer line.
The question you have to ask is how many times did Krul turn the ball over in comparison to the other 10 players?
Problem is when we stuff up there isn't a bloke behind us to save us, put a defender on the goal line and play them a ball and see the difference when they have that sort of pressure on them, its like penalties, anyone can take them with no pressure.

After one GK's error you came to the conclusion the majority of GK's are clueless?? Nothing like a good generalisation.
So after seeing Ashley Young I came to the conclusion all footballers are diving cheats.

Swanny, you're surely kidding. Back in antiquity you must remember some teams endlessly passed it back to the 'keeper who picked it up, and then that sequence would boringly start all over again. One of the best decisions ever made by the Greybeards of the Laws-of-the-Game Board (I.F.A.B.).

Regarding the reality that law change is here to stay, I do agree with you that it seems not enough 'keepers practice their footskills by taking part as an outfield player in intense small-sided games on training nights.

 Not clueless, just clueless with the ball at their feet. Two different things. And not all keepers, just what looks like a majority. And I really was only referring to professional keepers, who I would expect to be considerably more skilled than they are.

I'm sure your first thought after seeing Ashley Young was that was 8mil well spent!

Not kidding...the back pass rule came in before the 6 second rule....the latter might have achieved a similar thing....now keepers just waste time as effectively in other ways ie. by not picking up the ball and waiting until a forward runs up to them....there is still too much leeway to use up time.
Personally I think any pass back to the keeper should have to moved back into play (outside the box) within a given time (10 seconds maybe) whether they pick the ball up or not.

That would be ridiculous. It for the attackers to close him down and make him play it.

The difference between a goalkeeper and an outfield player is that the goalkeeper is always receiving the ball at his feet when he is stagnate, as apposed to a player who has a lot more space around him to move and is generally on the move when receiving a ball and is generally in the mind set to move in any direction he needs to, forward, backwards, left or right. Goalkeepers look clumsy because there first instinct is to protect the goal and when they receive a back past there only option is to go forward (which half the players on the field fail to make look easy) - there option is not to go backwards and shield the ball until a better option presents its self. Goalkeepers passing & decision making is harder than an outfield player at times because they don't have the easy option of passing back or playing for a free kicks or a throw-in. A good goalkeeper will make the decision what to do with the ball before he receives it, even if he has no skills he can make the right decision. If a goalkeeper does not have good decision making skills he will come unstuck.
Unfortunately they don't practice specific ball skills at there feet enough. Especially in England

Coach: "shut up and sit down"
