Next England captain......
In the wake of England's poor world cup it is probably right that Stevie G should hang up his England boots. Whilst he certainly wasn't the first choice captain there's no denying his credentials for the job. So who's next?
I would give it to Willshere as the leader of the next generation however 'Woy' was picked for the job as he represented the conservative view of the FA despite the public demand for 'Arry and he may encourage SG to stay on so he doesn't have to do anything too hard.

Re: Next England captain......
Wouldn't the captain have to be fit most of the time?
Hart obvious choice you'd, but Henderson may be a good candidate in the future. He captained the u/21s and will be a future captain of Liverpool.
Needs to earn his stripes though and add some goals/assists to his game...

Yes and the Captain should also be good enough to get into the team - that rules Henderson out.The Kop wrote:Wouldn't the captain have to be fit most of the time?

I wish Liverpool fans would try and look at things without their reds glasses on.

Needs to add some game, he was woefully inadequate against Uruguay. The Kop wrote:Wouldn't the captain have to be fit most of the time?

I'm not a fan of keepers being captain, simply because they're so removed from the rest of the team (and some might say, reality ), so Cahill is probably our best bet atm. Mind you, he can't organise himself, so that doesn't bode well for the job.
Barkley at DM or Wilshere at CM for me.

It'll be Henderson.
Well, maybe not directly after Gerrard, but he'll be captain at some point.

He'll need to get considerably better just to keep his place.BTAC wrote:It'll be Henderson.

He's wasted in a deep role, you won't get anywhere near the best from him in that role.Nice One Cyril wrote:He'll need to get considerably better just to keep his place.BTAC wrote:It'll be Henderson.

I suspect that will be fixed when England find a half decent manager.

Trust me here, my source is impeccable. Frank Lampard will be the next England captain.

Barkley at DM or Wilshere at CM for me.
Any 2 man midfield will be inadequate against 3, regardless of quality. All combos will be overrun, even the troll-lol-Liverpool-fan combo of Wilshere-Barkley would have been all at sea against a 3 man midfield.
England’s best option in midfield this tournament was Gerrard at DM, Henderson with Barkley in CM too in front.
2 out of 3 energetic and athletic midfielders with the DM playing like a deep playmaker and you rarely get overrun in the middle.

Name the bet then?
I'll keep it simple for you, mine's a Heineken at Jets v uni. I won't be there but they will pass it on.

I don't care particularly strongly either way, just merely pointing out that when you go on the word of your sources you tend to get let down.God is an Englishman wrote:Name the bet then?

Given that Hodgson has already said publicly that Lampard will captain England in the last group game I think it's a fairly safe bet on your behalf.

You'd think Hodgson (who picks the team) would be a pretty reliable source for GIAE.Black_Panther wrote:I don't care particularly strongly either way, just merely pointing out that when you go on the word of your sources you tend to get let down.God is an Englishman wrote:Name the bet then?

Re: Next England captain......
JT is the right captain of England and had it not been for the weakness of the FA making him prove his innocence rather than presuming his guilt he may well have seen fit to play in Brazil. Gerrard is good but he is no JT as a captain.
Give it to Willshere - Henderson is terrible.

So my source was correct then. Thanks for playing.
Can't remember the last time I was let down by one though.

Re: Next England captain......
See above re Henderson - Baines will probably come under more pressure than most with the emergence of Shaw I would say.

Re: Next England captain......
Baines is not a great defender, he's a frustrated winger (a la Gareth Bale), so unless you have two really good centre halves, he's a liability and I'd choose Shaw ahead of him even now. If you're stuck for a natural left winger you could always squeeze Baines in there as he would also give some cover to a young left back. They won't do it, but it would be interesting to see in a friendly game sometime.Old Redback wrote:See above re Henderson - Baines will probably come under more pressure than most with the emergence of Shaw I would say.
