Serie A Report: Fiorentina And Milan Share Spoils

A last-minute goal from Alberto Gilardino allowed Milan to avoid another defeat at Fiorentina, earning them a 2-2 draw.

Milan started with a 4-4-2 that saw Kaká play alongside Gilardino in attack, and Gattuso was back in midfield. Fiorentina played a 4-3-1-2 system with Montolivo behind Toni and Mutu.

Milan took the lead after only four minutes through Alberto Gilardino, who scored with a left-footed shot from a pass by Brocchi. After that Milan started sitting back in defence, trying to play on the counterattack, which is not really in their style. After 16 minutes they paid the price when Kaladze handled the ball inside the area and the penalty was despatched into the goal by Mutu (20').

Fiorentina did not look satisfied with the draw and continued the push forward. However they did not create any more chances in the first half, which finished 1-1.

In the second half the match continued to be balanced, although Fiorentina had the better of the play most of the time. They deservedly took the lead in the 76th minute thanks to Mutu's second goal, who anticipated Jankulovski and beat Kalac by picking up a cross from the left.

Spurred on by an ecstatic home crowd, it looked like Fiorentina might score the third goal to kill off the match. However, Milan managed to grab an unexpected equaliser in the 89th minute when Gilardino surprised Kroldrup inside the area in a corner kick move.

It was probably less than Fiorentina deserved as they played an excellent match. However Milan saved themselves with their character to grab an equaliser in the final minutes that secured their third consecutive draw. Milan are 14th with 14 points, while Fiorentina are 16th with 12 points.

Fiorentina (2): Frey; Ujfalusi, Dainelli, Kroldrup, Pasqual; Gobbi, Liverani, Donadel; Montolivo (Jorgensen 62); Toni, Mutu (Pazzini 78)

AC Milan (2): Kalac; Cafu, Simic, Kaladze, Jankulovski; Brocchi (Inzaghi 78), Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf (Gourcuff 85); Kakà; Gilardino

At least they are persisting with him.

He has a great record in the Serie A and its imperative for the national team's sake that he does well.
