English Premier Clubs fail to provide for Disabled Supporter
The following article was published today on the BBC's Premier League website and demonstrates the lack of progress and duty of care by the supposed "Number One League" in world football.
As usual English Football is way behind the rest of the world in changing attitudes.
Premier League clubs warned over needs of disabled fans
Urgent changes must be made for disabled fans at football grounds, a House of Lords committee has heard.
It follows a BBC report which revealed that only three Premier League stadiums currently provide the required number of wheelchair spaces.
"If football is to avoid having to face scores of claims for damages under the Equality Act, action is needed now," Lord Faulkner of Worcester insisted.
"It is not acceptable for clubs to neglect the needs of disabled fans."
Who Performs Best?
Wheelchair spaces provided as a percentage of Accessible Stadia Guide recommendations
1. Swansea 121%
2. Southampton 104%
3. Cardiff 102%
4. Arsenal 96%
5. West Brom 89%
6. Hull 89%
7. Manchester City 88%
8. Newcastle 73%
9. Sunderland 70%
10. Stoke 68%
11. West Ham 60%
12. Everton 56%
13. Norwich 49%
14. Chelsea 47%
15. Liverpool 45%
16. Manchester United 43%
17. Crystal Palace 40%
18. Aston Villa 39%
19. Tottenham 28%
20. Fulham 24%
The BBC report revealed only Swansea, Southampton and Cardiff provide the required amount of disabled spaces and added that eight of the 20 Premier League clubs fail to offer half that number.
At three Premier League grounds - Upton Park, Villa Park and Anfield - limited wheelchair allocation resulted in opposing fans being placed together.
Current guidelines on how football clubs in the United Kingdom should cater for disabled spectators have been in place since the 2003 Accessible Stadia Guide (ASG).
Lord Faulkner, who is also a vice-president of both the Football Conference and Level Playing Field, formerly known as the National Association of Disabled Supporters, addressed an Olympic and Paralympic Legacy committee debate on disabled supporters at football grounds.
"Taking all 92 professional football clubs into account, only 14 provide the minimum recommended number of wheelchair user spaces, and many clubs offer only very few away spaces for wheelchair users, some as few as three," he said.
"This is not good enough and something has to be done.
"First, there needs to be an access audit review into what has to be done at each ground to ensure that every club meets at least the minimum requirements of the ASG.
"A strict timetable must then be established for the implementation of the necessary work. This programme should be overseen by the Sports Grounds Safety Authority and funded, if necessary, by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund.
"However, given the amount of money within football today compared with 20 or so years ago, and with clubs prepared to pay players up to £300,000 a week, it is not acceptable for the clubs to plead poverty and to continue to neglect the reasonable access needs of their disabled fans.
"They have had more than 20 years to make the necessary changes."
Former Paralympian Baroness Grey-Thompson, now a crossbench life peer in the House of Lords, said it was "completely unacceptable" for opposing disabled fans to be forced to sit together and "strongly disagreed" with specialist pricing programmes and ticketing policies which she said would mean they were "further excluded from watching the sport they love".

Looking at the list of percentages it basically shows that the older a club's stadium the less facilities they have for people with a disability.
BTW shouldn't this go in World Football forum?

I was hoping to use this to stimulate a discussion of how A League clubs compare to the English standard.
Hindmarsh has pretty good facilities for wheelchair supporters but not much in the way of seating for fans dependent on crutches or walking aids.
There is also little in the way of separate facilities for away fans.

Agree with the old stadium part.
Liverpool will have far more wheelchair spaces if/when our stadium is upgraded. We have held discussions re this only recently, and it's all minuted.

The sooner Anfield gets upgraded the better. I hear the club bought up all the housing around the stadium but have left it all vacant. So its apparently becoming a bit of a hobo hang out now. Great way to welcome the fans!Digger wrote:Agree with the old stadium part.

Re: English Premier Clubs fail to provide for Disabled Suppo
Almost true. Liverpool are trying to buy up all the houses, but they still need 5 more, and may need CPO's. When they have those 5 the redevelopment of the area can start.Stuckey wrote:The sooner Anfield gets upgraded the better. Anfield is now one of the most run down areas in Europe due to the lengthy delay in the regeneration.

White Hart Lane one is incorrect. They hold 30k plus disabled people. Just that not all of them require a wheelchair.

LFC, the council and the ones who won’t sell are all to blame to an extent, , hence the reason the CPOs’ may have to be put in place.
A lot has happened in the past year since that article, why don’t you post the positive stories about the progress? Or do you only want to put one side of the story, as you know most on here wont research it themself.

why should anyone be forced to sell their house for the benefit of a club they obviously don't support?

Do you have any idea how CPO's work? and the rationale behind them?

Re: English Premier Clubs fail to provide for Disabled Suppo
there is a very poor number of disabled parks around hind marsh, can't expect a lot of disabled to walk from miles away
Re: English Premier Clubs fail to provide for Disabled Suppo
I agree. That and or better public transport to the ground needs to be looked at. Much more important then the colour of the seats!clemence wrote:there is a very poor number of disabled parks around hind marsh, can't expect a lot of disabled to walk from miles away

Re: English Premier Clubs fail to provide for Disabled Suppo
Let's move on from the cars as I haven't a scooby what you are on about about changing things, and its the same this week.
LFC aren't using CPOs', I would read up on who issues them, how many articles have you read about what the Liverpool City council, and the club are planning for the area?
Liverpool Football Club is more than just a stadium in L4, but I am really not going to bother trying to educate you or MG&Son on something that is way out your league. You just want to have a go at a club that does far more for a City than AU could ever wish to do

@clemence, its pretty close, I dont think much can be done to improve this.
