Czech defender Pavel Mares looks set to complete a move to Bolton after bidding farewell to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday.
Zenit president Sergei Fursenko paid a glowing tribute to Mares on the club website, saying the club is losing "one of its best loved players".
Mares told the website: "I think it is the dream of many footballers. Many dream of playing in the Premier League, one of the strongest in the world.
"There they have very good stadia, fans, football. I did study at English at school, and I think I will be able to find a common language with my new team-mates."
There has yet to be any official confirmation of the transfer from either club.
Mares, 30, has spent three years in St Petersburg since joining from Sparta Prague.
