Group D: Greece v Sweden

Post by Missing Post Count »

Sweden have only managed to defeat Greece once before – this came way back in the 1920 Olympic Games in Belgium, but was a massive 9-0 victory. Greece have managed to score exactly two goals in their last three matches against the Swedes.
In their last meeting, Greece prevailed 2-1 away in Sweden thanks to second half goals from Stelios Giannakopoulos and Pantelis Kafes to cancel out a first half strike from Anders Svensson.

Are there any Swedish in origin posters here? Or are you waiting for the result? All the Andersons, Johansons and all the other sons of a gun on here be proud of your heritage and dont hide to wait and see if the coast is clear. The ones that go the tennis, surely you must also love the world game!

Actually some of the female Swedish fans make you want to barrack for them :wink:

As long as we win and get through to the next stage I dont have a problem if your boys knock spain and russia out.

Come on Inga and Helga lay it on the line.

Greece likely lineup::
(4-3-3)
Nikpolidis
Seitaridis, Dellas, Kyriakgos, Torosidis
Basinas, Karagounis, Katsouranis
Amanatidis, Gekas, Charisteas/Samaras.

Sweden likely lineup::
(4-1-3-2)
Isakson
Stoor, Melberg, Majstrovic, Nilson,
Linderoth
Ljungberg, Kallstrom, Wilhelmson
Ibrahimovic, Larson/Elmander

Synopsis::
Sweden's front 5 are much better than Greece's equiv. Sweden's back 4 is relatively weak and keeper Isakson is prone to some howling errors, I would say the worst defensive unit in the group.
-A lot of defensive duties will rest on Linderoth cos he wont get much defensive quality from the other 3 midfielders.
-Even though Sweden have some good up and coming stars (ie Elmander and Kallstrom) the barometer of this team has been and still will be Ibrahimovic. In terms of marking for Greece, there's tall timber back there. Zlatan's size and strength wont be a problem. But without help from the fullbacks either side of the centre backs his agility and speed for a big man will trouble Greece.
- During the game watch one of the 3 forwards for Greece occasionally sit a little bit deeper in midfield to be picked up by Linderoth and try and drag him out of the guts to a flank. Classic Greece play, ive seen it done a thousand times.

Zlatan will pose no threat for the in-form kyrgiakos and Dellas. Larson
was a great striker but is too old and hasn't been playing much first team football
to pose a threat and also ljungberg is past his best. Tactically Greece will be far superior
as the mind games have already started with the 3-2 loss to Hungary. Gekas to score a double
and Greece to take maximum points from their opening game.

I have absolutely no connection to Sweden but I have adopted them as my other European team. I of course support the Aussies before anyone else but they don't play in Europe. Scotland never qualify for anything so since 1994, I have been a Swedish Supporter!! I own two shirts and even learnt a few Swedish words :D

Allback to come on as a sub and pinch a winner against the Greeks.

I remember Morocco smashing Scotland in the last game and watching them celebrate getting through to the next round. Then news came through that Norway beat Brazil.

Slight change of mood occurred.

Initially sbs had planned to show Brazil v Norway live, but made a sudden change to the Morocco v Scotland tie thinking that would determine who would progress with Brazil. Then when they said Paul Williams would commentate I thought I can't stand this guy and as I had done with all the games he did I muted to tv and listened to foreign language commentary on sbs radio. On this occasion they left the Portuguese commentary of the Brazil game so I knew that Norway had won before sbs broadcasted it, but it was the most boring game I've ever seen, despite the result.

Norway suffered their own change of mood scenario at Euro 2000 after Spain knocked in two goals after the Norway game had finished to pip them into the second round.

Ibrahimovic hasnt scored for Sweden since 2005 and apparantly wont last more than 60mins due to injury.
I think he will be targeted by the Greek defenders like Nedved was in 2004.

Zlatan will either limp off, or be sent off.

Zlatan looking less and less likely to play now.
Mark my words once again, if he isnt 100% fit (which obviously he isnt) there are 2 outcomes for him. Off injured or off for an early shower.
