Downs vs Metrostars

Post by brushmancity »

Congratulations to Elizabeth Downs Soccer Club on achieving an historic victory over Metrostars in the FFA cup quarter final. 3-3 AET and I believe the score was 4-2 on penalties.

What a night. One of the best entertaining games i have seen. Both teams hitting the post or cross bar on numerous attacks. Great saves by Benny in goal for the downs. 2 nil down and to come back to lead 3 2 we were hoping to hang on. Metro equalized. Game on. Came down to penalties and in front of well over a 1000 crowd, Downs achieved one of their greatest wins of all time. As i said before, what a night.

one of their greatest wins?

I'm thinking the best win ever by a SAASL side?

Not sure if anyone has ever made the semi final of federation cup? Inter may have made a quarters? also the Cove when they were amateurs.

Not quite the same but Whyalla Croatia had a dream cup run in early 70's (I think)?

Well done Elizabeth Downs and everyone involved.

Not sure how it compares, when In 1986 3rd division saasl club Brahma Lodge knocked out Cumberland United, ( cup finalists from 1985 )
Great having last nights game as mid week game so more people got to witness a great spectacle.
Without thinking too far ahead, should an amateur club win this Cup, do they then qualify for FFA cup ?

Could this be the start of Downs having the ambition to join State League 2 & showing some of the other Northern clubs how its done ?
Do the Downs also have some junior teams ?
Be interesting to see :D

Always had bucket loads of Junior teams in the E&DJS since early 1960s.
The Downs have always had ambitions, to be the best family club, put on entertaining football and free entry...a few 3rd-4th generation players.
Not sure joining State League 2 would be one of those ambitions.

Without knowing a lot about the club sounds like they have a great base to build upon to challenge in the NPL leagues, juniors & seniors.
We need more we’ll run Northern clubs to grow & be successful to challenge the eastern suburbs.

No I wouldn’t support that at this point in time. We’ve always encouraged and supported our juniors to go to Federation clubs to further develop and then welcome them back when they want to play Sundays for a variety of reasons. It takes a lot to b successful in the saasl let alone federation.
