SUNDAY Premier Division Round 18 Write Up

Post by Ossie »

ELIZABETH Downs have made it back to back titles after clinching the championship on a drama filled final day of action where three sides topped the table at various stages.

Ingle Farm started the day in 1st place knowing that a win over the 3rd placed Brahma would secure their clubs 2nd league title. The Downs needed Farm to slip up and needed to win while Brahma needed to win by two goals and hope that Para Hills West could get a result against the Downs.

Farm, playing at Walkleys Oval, opened brightly and the Brahma defence looked a little shaky but after steadying the visiting Lodge opened the scoring on 16 minutes when key playmaker Chad Bugeja created some space for himself before rifling a shot into the far corner from 20 yards.

Lodge took a deserved 1-0 lead to the break while at The Manor Farm ground Elizabeth Downs was being held 0-0 by a plucky Para Hills West.

In the 48th minute at Walkleys Oval Brahma made it 2-0 when a long diagonal ball from Jordan Pudler picked out Robbie McDonald who brought the ball down cut inside and finished coolly, and with that goal Brahma were now top of the table!

Brahma’s hold on top spot was short lived as Elizabeth Downs took the lead at Manor Farm Ground when Billy Allotey played in Luke Lawley who fired home on 47 minutes to put the reigning champs back on top.

Ten minutes later the Downs had a grip on their 6th League Championship as a Sam Watson long distance cross surprised Westies keeper David Brook and finished in the net to make it 2-0.

Michael Mullen put Lodge 3-0 up with a classy back heal and Jay Crescenzi rounded out a 4-0 Brahma win while at the Manor Farm Ground the Downs fans were celebrating a 4-0 win with an own goal followed by a Ben McMullen header.

The final wash up saw Elizabeth Downs finish top two point clear of Brahma Lodge while the league leaders at the start of the day, Ingle Farm, were reduced to a 3rd place finish.

They say timing is everything, the Downs waited until the last round to grab top spot on the back of an 11 game unbeaten run.

1st year Downs coach Steve Hughes was delighted “We knew that we just had to win and that Farm still had work to do so, we certainly gave ourselves a fighting chance. We will celebrate tonight and tomorrow but then we need to prepare well for our semi-final against Farm next Sunday.”

Brahma coach Freddy Agius was proud of his team “We came into today knowing we needed a slip up and at half time we felt like we were a chance but it wasn’t to be. We finished the season well and we now look forward to the Cup.”

While Farm will look at this as an opportunity lost it shouldn’t be forgotten that this Farm team collected just 18 points in 2017 when they finished 7th. Coach Paul Simpson was proud of his teams season “Im very proud of the teams efforts this season. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances in the last three weeks but I have no complaints we were beaten by a better team today.”
Simpson also congratulated the Downs “I congratulate Steve Hughes and his team on winning the league”.

AT the other end of the table TEA Tree Gully have survived relegation despite going down 2-0 to Salisbury Inter at Tilley Reserve.

Gully came into the game holding a one-point and goal difference buffer over the 9th placed Para Hills East while Inter were looking for their 1st win since round 13.

After a goalless first half Inter took the lead on the hour after a quick free kick from Michael Centrone picked out Russell Deeley who headed home strongly from 10 yards out.

The lead was doubled on 75 minutes when Inter substitute Braydon Fleming finished his one on one chance coolly to seal Inter’s 2nd away win of the season.

News soon filtered through that Para Hills East had gone down 3-1 to Parafield Gardens thus ensuring that Gully would remain in the top flight.

Gully coach Mat Flounders “Obviously we are happy that we are in the top division again next season. We have a really young group who are learning a lot and I think we will be better for our experience this season.”

PARA Hills East have been relegated after a 3-1 loss to Parafield Gardens at Para Hill Oval.

First and foremost, East knew a win was required to give them any chance of survival but they found themselves a goal down at the break when Gardens Declan Williams opened the scoring.

On the hour Easties hopes were all but over when Brodie O’Neil found the back of the net and Gabi Beron made it 3-0 on 70 minutes.

Easties grabbed a consolation goal on 80 minutes through Jordan Tilley but it was too little too late.

East coach Alan O’Donnell “At the end of the day we weren’t good enough. The Gully loss at home was probably the one that cost us in the end”.

A MICHAEL Francis penalty proved decisive as Elizabeth Vale finished their season with a 2-1 win over the relegated Salisbury Florina at Moflin Road.

The Vale opened the scoring on six minutes through the unlikely Andy Kokot but the teams went to the break locked at 1-1 after Beau Singlewood struck for the visitors.

The pivotal moment came on the hour when Kokot was fouled and Francis coolly converted the resulting penalty kick.

Vale coach Tim Crawford “It was a scrappy game today to be honest but the boys ground out a win. I’ve been really pleased with the way the boys finished the season.”

Seeking confirmation, but I am hearing Salisbury Florina will be folding  and Pontians moving to Underdown Park...if so, Rowe Park (3rd in Division 3) will likely be promoted to Division 2.
