Sunday Premier Division Round 17 Write Up

Post by Ossie »

Match of the Day
THE Sunday Premier Division title will be decided on the last day of the season after the league leading Ingle Farm suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Parafield Gardens at Bradman Oval.

Farm travelled to Gardens knowing that a win against their 5th placed opposition would seal the 2018 League Championship and in the 1st minute Stefan Barletta has a great opportunity to settle the nerves but shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Any thoughts of Gardens not being switched on were put to bed on three minutes when a fine long diagonal ball from Scott Wiedenbach picked out Callum Ebert who cut in before firing into the side netting.

On 20 minutes the quick Declan Williams was in on goal for Gardens but his shot was well saved by Farm keeper Michael Catford.

Farm looked a little disjointed and on 43 minutes fell behind when a long ball found Ebert who brought in down and then slotted coolly.

Gardens were now playing with real flair and a minute before the break nearly doubled their lead with another Ebert attempt brilliantly saved by Catford.

On 58 minutes disaster struck for the league leaders when a ball over the top found Williams who sped away from the Farm defence before lobbing the out coming
Catford to the delight of the Gardens faithful.

Farm played with more urgency in the last 20 minutes with substitute Musti Ipekdal firing just over on 78 minutes.

The travelling Farm support had hope on 90 minutes when an Oathman Fazilahead shot was parried into the path of Kaelan Tyson who fired home.

In a dramatic last few minutes Gardens keeper Anthony Stam saw red as did Farm’s Kaelan Tyson and Fazilahead.

Farm’s 1st loss of the season sees them enter the last round with a one-point lead over Elizabeth Downs and three points clear of their round 18 opponent Brahma Lodge.

Farm coach Paul Simpson “I think today just highlights the strength of the amateur league, credit to Parafield. For us it’s still very much in our hands.”

A Strong 2nd half has seen Elizabeth Downs cruise to a 5-0 win over the relegation threatened Para Hills East at Argana Park.

The Maroons came into the game knowing a win was paramount to keep any championship hopes alive while the 9th placed East were hoping for a shock result to jump out of the relegation zone.

On 27 minutes the deadlock was broken when a Luke Lawley cross from the left was put away at the 2nd attempt by Mat Watson.

Ten minutes after the break the lead was doubled when a shot from Scott Lindsay deflected in off Matt Wise.

The Downs then took control going 3-0 up through Mark Kelly after a nice ball from Sean Brennan.

Wise stabbed home from a corner to make it four before striker Billy Allotey rounded out the scoring.

News soon filtered through that Farm had lost, keeping the title race alive.

Downs coach Steve Hughes “Obviously happy to get the win and we go into the last round with everything to play for.”

BRAHMA Lodge will enter round 18 very much in the Championship hunt after a comfortable 6-2 win over Elizabeth Downs at Cockburn Green.

Lodge got off to the perfect start on four minutes when Robbie McDonald cut the ball back to Michael Mullen who passed the ball into the net.

The visiting Vale are well known for their fighting qualities and they went to the break level after a long throw found Zack Bennett at the back post which he headed home.

Brahma lifted a gear in the 2nd half with Mullen scoring his 2nd while McDonald got a brace, Dillon Centrone finding the net and Peter McDermott scoring the goal of the day after a barnstorming run.

The win is Brahma’s fourth in a row and they will travel to Farm next week knowing that a win will see them finish at least 2nd but also knowing that if Elizabeth Downs slips up against Para Hills West that the Championship could be theirs.

Lodge coach Fred Agius “A few results have gone our way so we go into next week looking for a win.”
Vale coach Tim Crawford “I was proud of the boy’s effort today. I think the score line was a bit harsh on us.”

TEA Tree Gully will enter round 18 one point above the relegation zone after a 1-1 draw with the bottom placed Salisbury Florina at Tilley Reserve.

Gully came into the game in 8th position just goal difference ahead of the 9th placed Para Hills East while Florina knew anything other than a win would confirm their relegation.

The teams went to the break locked at 0-0 thanks to some brilliant goal keeping from Florina’s Kieran Griffiths.

Gully took the lead on the hour from the penalty spot when Hamish Taylor was fouled and Liam Crook converted.

Florina refused to give in and with 15 minutes later they equalised also from the penalty spot when Evan Dimitriadis converted.

The draw confirmed that Salisbury Florina has been relegated while Gully will have a one-point buffer over Para Hills East going into the last round.

Gully coach Mat Flounders “I felt like we were all over them in the 1st half but their keeper was outstanding.”
Florina Coach Jeff McCormack “Kieran Griffiths kept us in the game in the 1st half. To our credit the boys hung in and ground out a result.”

NINE-man Para Hills West earned a point in a 0-0 draw with Salisbury Inter at Underdown Park.

The visiting Westies were reduced to ten men on 55 minutes when defender David Jones saw red and ten minutes later they were reduced to nine when Greg Jerome received his marching orders.

Despite the numerical disadvantage Westies refused to buckle earning a point which guarantees last years 2nd Division winners a top half of the table finish to the delight of coach Michael Iacovino “If you had offered us a top half of the table finish going into the season I would have taken it.”
Iacovino was proud of his team today “The boys had to dig deep today and they really did put a shift in, I’m just super proud of the effort today.”

Inter coach Steve Cook “It was a real battle that could have gone either way to be honest. As can often be the way we struggled to break them down after the send offs.”
